Woods Lake Elementary

Weekly Update February 15-19, 2021

Hello Woods Lake Family,

Kalamazoo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri announced at the Feb. 11 Board of Education meeting that KPS students will remain learning remotely for the third and final trimester of the school year. Trimester 3 begins on March 15 and ends the last day of school, June 11.

“To ensure that we were methodical about our decision around transitioning to Trimester 3, we again used the weighted formula created in October before the Trimester 2 announcement. The weighted formula prioritized safety above all else,” Raichoudhuri said. “We surveyed parents and employees and reviewed research and health department data. The results of the formula indicated five of the nine points supported remaining fully virtual. A majority of KPS employees and parents who responded to the survey supported the virtual option over the two-day-a-week hybrid learning model.”

Dr. Raichoudhuri also announced some of the opportunities that will be in place for Trimester 3 to support students and plans for large scale summer readiness camps which will begin on June 28. KPS will create a COVID Recovery Plan over the summer to outline plans for the 2021-22 school year which begins August 30.

As always, Stay Safe and Stay Healthy!

(KKIT) Kalamazoo Kids In Tune

This month Kids In Tune transforms into Families In Tune as we celebrate Family February! Every February we invite family members and loved ones of KKIT students to join our Orchestra for the month and learn an instrument alongside their student. We are so excited to welcome 25 family members into our Orchestra this month - our highest number of participants yet! Together we are all working on a new piece of music that we are excited to perform for everyone at our upcoming virtual Spring concert March 5th at 6:00pm. You can watch the performance and cheer on fellow Woods Lake students and their family members on our KKIT Facebook page, we will be live streaming the event.

That's not all! We are also hosting a photo scavenger hunt where families take pictures of themselves completing fun activities together in order to win a pizza party. So far, our families in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are all from Woods Lake! Last but not least, we are hosting a Family Game Night and KKIT Open House on Friday, February 19th at 6:00pm. If you'd like to play some fun games over Zoom with other KKIT families, you can RSVP here: https://forms.gle/vo1cF3TV4FwTZEv7A
