Unit 6: Numbers 1 - 20
A double ten frame is a great tool for this unit!
At one of my Greg Tang sessions last year he had us use unifix cubes to build our tens and we kept our ones separate. Building the ten and counting on the ones is a great way for them to start to build the concept of place value for tens and ones.
Unit 7: Counting to 100 by 1s and 10s.
This skill of rote counting is a foundatinoal piece for students as they begin to build and work with larger quantities. If they get hung up counting by ones, have them practice counting by tens, then show them the connection between 39, 40, and 49, 50, and so on.
First Grade
Students will need to review their place value to 30. In the review, have students build their tens and ones using unifix cubes. When they get to 100, tape it together! This concrete building will help them understand the base ten rods and flats, which can be an abstraction for them.
Unit 8: Counting and Skip Counting
As adults we use skip counting all the time! Later in the year they will use skip counting by 5s and 10s when counting money. This is also the foundation for multiplication.
Second Grade
Students should begin this unit with concrete manipulatives. Move onto representational models (drawings), then the algorithm. This is a must have for their journey to 3rd grade. If students are still unable to work the problems with out the manipulatives let them have access to them. Students are reading the problems on their own at this time in the year. However, if you have some that are well below grade level you may want to talk with your admin on their stance for reading it to them in a small group.
Unit 7: Measurement and TIme
Students build on what they learned in 1st grade. Now they are solving problems with length and usung both standard and nonstandard measurement.
Pre Kinder
Rote counting is an important step for understanding the value of number later on.
Numbers 6 - 10
If students have the value of five they are in great shape for this unit. If you used a five frame for number to 5, then a ten frame will be an easy way for them to transfer what they have already learned.
Ordinal Numbers
Some of them can not wait to be 1st! Make name tags for the 1st - 5th and rotate them around.
Equal parts
Sharing it turns out, is a fundamental life skill. I love breaking up some hershey's bars to introduce the concept of fair. Have students share counters out of a bowl and practice giving equal shares to friends at their tables.
Workstation Ideas
Make a Reading Math workstation.
This station can include the academic vocabulary cards in the curriculum. Also, any previously used test questions. They can just practice reading them and record if they are addition or subtraction problems.
Technology Tips
Also, check out this web page, from Krisiti Donald. There are great whiteboard activities starting with Counting and Number Sense.
If students have access to technology use printed bar codes for them to scan to get to a web page you want them to practice on like a fact fluency activity.
