About the Artist
Maria Martinez was a Native American artist who created pottery that is internationally known. Her and her family examined traditional Pueblo pottery styles and techniques to create pieces which reflect Pueblo's people legacy of fine artwork and crafts. Maria was from San Ildefonso Pueblo. It is only twenty miles away from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She learned her pottery skills from her aunt when she was very young. During that time the traditional pottery making techniques were being lost, but Maria and her family experimented with different techniques and helped preserve the cultural art. I love the art work that she did. I love the Native American look that is on her pottery. I also really like that it is black.
