Newton's Laws of Motion and Baseball
Newton's 1st Law of Motion
An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
- The motion of an object will change if an unbalanced force acts upon it.
Johnny Manziel
In this picture Johnny Manziel is the object in motion. He will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force, an Alabama player tackling him.
Blair Walsh
In this picture the object at rest is the football. It will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force, the kicker's foot.
Chad Johnson
In this picture the object in motion is the football. It will stay in motion until an outside force acts upon it, Chad Johnson.
Dr. Skateboard's Action Science - Newton's Laws 1 - First Law of Motion
Newton's 2nd Law of Motion
States that the acceleration of an object is in the same direction as the net force on the object, and that the acceleration equals the net force divided by the mass.
- F=mxa
Jacoby Ellsbury
The force generated at the moment of contact is equal to the combined mass &acceleration of both the bat and the ball.
R.A. Dickey
When R.A. Dickey throws the ball, the acceleration created by the throw is the force of the throw divided by the mass.
Jeff Bianchi
Bunters use the mass-acceleration factors at the moment of contact by allowing the barrel of the ball to slightly react to the force of the baseball
Newton's Second Law of Motion
Newton's 3rd Law of Motion
States that when one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts a force on the first object that is equal in strength and in the opposite direction.
- For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Blake Griffin
The action is him pulling down the rim. The reaction is the rim springing back up.
Jimmer Fredette
The action is him pushing the ball to the ground. The reaction is the ball bouncing up
Kevin Durant & Labron James
Labron shooting the ball is the action. Kevin Durant sending it back is the reaction.
