Our Bright and Shining Star
The Sun
The importance of the sun
The sun's layers
The inner layers of the sun are the core, the radiative zone, and the convection zone. The outer layers are the photosphere, the chromosphere, and the corona.
The Inner Layers
Core
The core is the innermost layer of the sun. Here, gravity has pressed the sun so much that hydrogen compresses to form helium, and it releases energy through nuclear fusion.
Radiative Zone
The radiative zone is the layer of the sun above the core. The density slowly decreases as you move away from the core, but the radiative zone is still so dense that it takes light about 100,000 years to move through it.
Convection Zone
The Outer Layers
Photosphere
Chromosphere
Corona
