English Language Arts (ELA)
Unit 7 Week 1
Essential Question:
How are some animals alike and how are they different?
Word Work
This week in Word Work we will...
discriminate between short /u/ and long /u/ in the middle of words.
isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme words.
write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds (phonemes).
Shared Reading
This week in shared reading we will...
- retell information from a non – fiction book.
retell the story by sequencing it’s events.
use punctuation and question words to identify the repeating words in the story.
retell a related non – fiction book by identifying the animals and their offspring.
Grammar
This week is Grammar and Writing we will...
- learn about verbs (action words)
- learn about compound words.
- write and draw to give information about animals.
- draw pictures that match spoken contributions.
Centers
This week in Centers we will...
- practice letters/sounds, sight words, and compound words.
- follow directions in order to create duck puppet.
- practice math skills on the computer using Dreambox.
- add sight words in order to complete a book.
- work with the teacher in guided reading groups.
Math
Unit 4 Investigation 2: Counting
This week in math we will...
add or subtract one to/from numbers up to ten
model the action of combining and separated situations.
comparing numbers to determine which is more.
work on addition story problems.
Content
This week in Content we will ...
- identify facts about bears (their seasonal behavior (habitat and offspring).
- name other animal habitats and offspring.
- continue working on the Push and Pull Unit
Possible Upcoming Field Trip Information
We are working on a possible field trip to the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) on Tuesday April 5th, to go along with the art curriculum. I will keep you posted as to when it is official and the time. In the meantime let me know if you would like to be a chaperone for this trip.

Volunteer Training
Birthday Celebration
We will celebrate monthly birthdays on the last Friday (if possible) of each month. Parents are welcome to celebrate their child's birthday with us. Please make sure that you have completed and returned the volunteer application and training/certificate. There is no food allowed at these celebrations. However, your child may choose to share a book for our class library, a game for indoor or outdoor recess, a small item like a pencil, or a craft to do during the celebration.
