What have we been up to this Unit?

Math- Place Value

Students have finished their unit on Geometry and telling time! What an amazing job we did! As a class we did an amazing job! We explored shapes, how to partition them into fractions. We learned how many parts it takes to make a whole. Students explored how to create fractions that are equal and compare fractions with visuals. Students will need to keep working with fractions and time- we will continue to see practice in these skills through our second grade spiral review that is assigned for homework. We will be moving on to Module 5 in our EngageNY math curriculum. Students will be exploring addition and subtraction of larger numbers using base ten strategies to make adding and subtracting with and without regrouping easier. Students will be practicing working on word problems and numbers with 3 digits. Please see the managebac calendar for more data.

English Language Arts

Students have really enjoyed our Author Study on Laura Numeroff- We were able to explore main Topic and Authors Purpose through our exploration of her texts. We also compared writing styles and practiced writing stories in the same format as Laura Numeroff exploring cause and effect relationships in her book series "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" and others. Students loved getting a book to take home to add to their libraries at home!

Small Group Reading: Different students are working on different goals- In small group students are exploring goals like:

  • Green Group: Read the text the way the author would (Fluency)
  • Purple Group: Students are using prior knowledge to connect with the text (Comprehension)
  • Orange Group:Students are working on identifying a meaning of a word by breaking the word parts down (like birdhouse- bird and house are easy and therefore we know what birdhouse means)- Expanding Vocabulary
  • Yellow Group: Students are exploring the goal of Summarizing a text (Comprehension)
Students are assigned texts to practice these goals each week that are on level and are targeted to their individual goals based on data and evidence gathered on what students need to practice- through observation and testing reports. Students can continue to practice these goals at home when they are reading. Parents can help out by asking students questions about what they are reading just to get students used to talking about what they are reading but in their own words.

Vocabulary: Homework Due Date: March 20th (See managebac for more information) Students will be tested on this vocabulary at the end of our unit on

Class Read Aloud: "The Mouse and the Motorcycles' is coming along quite nicely- students have really enjoyed listening to the story of Mouse and the Motorcycle- students have been trying out our goal in their own reading of using character voices in their reading and when they are reading to friends. Some students have made connections to previous units as well as our current unit. this class gets really excited when we are able to read aloud- parents can try read aloud at home by selecting books their family is interested in and reading one chapter a night!.

Science and Social Studies

Students have been exploring earth and geography and they have demonstrate how different types of erosion and weathering occur to shape our earth. We also have been exploring technology and how technology has changed the way we communicate and travel adn how this has influenced our advancements as a society. Students will be finishing up their clay landforms and presenting them, collecting rocks and observing their attributes adn shapes and exploring weather through hands on experiences demonstrating weathering and erosion and how it changes their rocks. We have also been identifying and inqwuiring about the Prime Meridian and The Equator- where it is and what its purpose is.

Social Studies:

Students have worked to Identify the purpose and use of a globe and a variety of maps and atlases, such as school maps, neighborhood maps and simple atlases through exploring the different sources we find this information in. Students explored and used map elements, such as title, compass rose, and legend/key to interpret a map. We have been inquiring about the equator, poles, seven continents, four oceans, and countries on a map and globe and have idenitfied places we can use to find this information as a resource.

What to expect next......

In the next few weeks we will be:

  • Finishing our exploration of geography and Changes in Earths surface.
  • Finalizing our unit of inquiry into technolgical advances in communication and transportation.
  • In math we will continue working in Module 5 with manipulating numbers and values to add and subtract using a variety of methods which will increase student understanding and strengthen deeper understanding of the 'How' and the 'Why' of math and not just the 'What'.
  • In reading we are continuing to increase our vocabulary and working on our individual reading goals to become better readers through comprehension and accuracy while reading.
  • We are working throughout the year on writing sequentially and walking through the writing process this unit our focus is using transitional words that demonstrate sequence such as First, Next, Then and Last. These words will show students how to order their writing so that it flows in a way that is easy for readers to understand.

  • Our end of unit summative will be worked on in class this coming up week. We are demonstrating our understanding of what we have learned in a variety of areas- Please see managebac for a complete description and list of deadlines and expecations.
