Happy Friday Aviators!


We had a great week welcoming back our Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade students. Students did an amazing job showing accountability for mask wearing, social distancing, and hand washing.


Please be sure to check out our RETURN TO SCHOOL PARENT COMMUNICATION as it contains information about times for arrival and dismissal. There are answers to many frequently asked questions. Now is a good time to start practicing mask wearing with your child(ren).

Please note that for the third marking period, we do not have the ability to staff or arrange Cafeteria Parent Pick-Up or Walkers/Bikers to and from school. We will revisit this once we get students and staff acclimated to the CDC guidelines and requirements for social distancing.


Calendar Reminders:

  • Friday, February 26th: Two hour early dismissal (no Pre-K)

  • Monday, March 1st: 2nd-5th grade students return to school in hybrid format

Bus Routes For Hybrid Learning

As we move into hybrid learning there may be changes to school bus routes and student pick-up and drop-off times. Be sure to check the SMCPS Elocator for updated information. Please note that during the month of February, buses are only picking up pre-K, K and first grade students. Route times may not be exact. It is advised that you arrive at your stop ten minutes in advance of your pick up time. Times should be more exact as all students grade pre-K through fifth return.


Also- Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students MUST have a responsible adult with them at the bus door for both pick-up and drop-off.

Medication Updates

Please contact Nurse Dana if your child needs medications at school. Medication order forms will need to be completed by your child's medical provider and an appointment needs to be made with the school nurse to drop off medication prior to the first day of in-person learning. Parents of new students, please send in your child's Maryland Record of Physical Examination completed by your healthcare provider if you have not already done so.

Birthday Celebrations and Treats

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, and our building remaining closed to outside visitors, we will not be able to accept or pass out any type of birthday treats this year. Please consider ways to celebrate your child; consider asking their classroom teachers for ways to safely recognize student birthdays.

2020-2021 Yearbooks

It's time to think about our yearbook! We have a tentative Picture Day for March! No matter, we will fill this year's memoir with a variety of photos highlighting our Aviators in many different activities.


Families are encouraged to send in photos to be considered for inclusion in this year's yearbook. Some activities to consider:


  • First day of school (virtual or in person)
  • Theme Thursday photos
  • "Trunk or Treat" or "Winter Wonderland Drive Thru" photos
  • Candid learning photos


Send your photos to Mrs. Magill (samagill@smcps.org) today.


Information about ordering a yearbook (we will be conducting online sales) will be shared later this Spring.

Meal Distribution

Curbside meals will resume distribution at all school sites on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday beginning on February 22, 2021. The time for meal distribution is 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Please note that meals will now be distributed in the back of the school, near the playground and cafeteria doors.

New To Duke Elementary?

Please know that the email / online registrations that have been completed this summer are considered a temporary registration as the schools are closed. We are required to get the original registration documents before the students are allowed to physically attend school in person. If you did not come in for an appointment to register your child, I will need the originals of any documents that require your signature (and of course, I need your signature on them). These documents were emailed to us; therefore you should have them already. You do NOT have to redo all of your documents, just get me the originals of the documents that you submitted to us.
