Principal's Message

"Autumn is a second spring, when every leaf is a flower." - Albert Camus

After a smooth start-up to the year, students are now well into the routines and comfortable with the new protocols that this school year has brought. We are so proud of how well they have adapted to the changes that COVID has caused. Students have done a great job with their masks, staying in their cohorts at recess, and keeping their distance in hallways and washrooms. We know that these protocols are in place to keep everyone safe and in school, where we can focus on learning together.

We also appreciate the efforts of parents and guardians to meet our new expectations. We recognize the work involved in daily screening, managing masks, and keeping children home more than in the past. We know that it is a long, inconvenient process to go through the COVID assessment process, but we also know that following Public Health's guidelines will keep our community as healthy as possible, and will allow schools to stay open through the fall.

We try to make our communications with families as effective as possible. All email communication will be done through School Messenger this year, so please ensure that we have your correct email address on file at school. Our website: also has our newsletters, a school calendar, and other useful information. Twitter is another way to keep up with what's happening at Rideau. Follow us @RideauPS_LDSB . You don't even need a Twitter account to follow us! Just Google @RideauPS_LDSB and you can see our Twitter feed. You can always get in touch with us through email at or by calling the school at 613-546-5901. Thank you for your continued support of the work we do every day!

G. Seiveright, Principal

Screen your child every day!

On October 1, the Ontario Government released revised screening guidelines for schools. The new guidelines are available through our school and Board websites, and at The new screening protocol has some significant changes, and will result in fewer COVID tests and school days missed due to a single minor symptom such as a runny nose. Please review the new screener carefully and continue to screen students every day before school! Thank you for your cooperation.

staffing update

Congratulations to our head custodian, Mr. Jenkins, who was recently promoted to the position of Operations Supervisor with Facility Services. Mr. Jenkins has done an amazing job in his 4 years at Rideau, and will be missed by staff and students alike. His last day at Rideau before starting his new position is Friday, October 2. We wish Mr. Jenkins all the best in his new job, and will look forward to welcoming his replacement soon.

Dress for fall!

This fall, we are taking learning outdoors as much as possible, to increase distancing and to give students and staff a mask break. Please make sure that students are dressed for the weather, including a jacket as necessary. Light rain will probably not keep us indoors to the extent it has in the past, so raincoats and boots should be ready to go as well, but please leave the umbrellas at home - they just get in the way of fun!

indoor shoes

Big picture
Now that fall rains are upon us and snow is around the corner, we are ready for students to bring and leave their indoor shoes at school. Educators will implement practices in their classroom to ensure that safe distancing is maintained when students are changing their shoes. This will allow us to keep the mud, water, and (shortly) snow out of the classrooms and make it easier on our custodial team.

School Council News

Big picture

We had our Annual General Meeting at the end of September to elect this year's council. Congratulations to co-chairs Jim Jodoin and Sarah Phinney, Treasurer Patricia Parks, and Secretary Dawn Duffenais. We had a great number of parents and guardians come out and volunteer for other positions as well as Member-at-Large positions. You can still join as a Member-at-Large at our next meeting, and even if you don't want to be a voting member, all parents and guardians are welcome at all our meetings.

Our next two meetings for the fall are scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, and Wednesday November 25 at 6:30 p.m. Until further notice we are meeting outside at the Outdoor Classroom this year, so dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair as seating is limited! We hope you can join us!

safety week

We had a great Safety Week last week! Students practiced Fire Drill evacuations twice, following our new distancing protocols developed by the Fire Department and Public Health. Everyone did a great job of evacuating quickly and safely. We also practiced our Lockdown Drill, with age-appropriate messaging as to why we might need to Lock Down. Classes also watched a Bus Safety video starring Buster the Bus, and some classes practiced their emergency anaphylaxis procedure. Announcements focused on personal safety all week. We know that safety messaging is ongoing, but having one week of focused attention on these important topics helps us all get on the same page early in the year.

Terry Fox Run

Big picture
Classes had a great time last week running around the track and block in our annual Terry Fox Run. Thanks to your generosity, Rideau's campaign raised over $2000 for cancer research! Thank you students and families for your participation and giving spirit. You can still donate online to our school campaign if you forgot or missed the notification, at: .

Remember a water bottle every day!
