News you can use from Dena'ina Elementary School

Principal Post

Dear Dena'ina Families,

We are so happy to have had a great kickoff to a new school year. Thank you again for flexibility, patience and respect as we navigate this new normal.

We especially appreciate your patience with our Zoom classroom meetings this week. We were testing out how to get our At-Home Learners connected with their classmates in school during class meetings. We had a few technical difficulties but overall it went well. We will continue those meetings on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Zoom meetings are not recorded, and are done in a manner to comply with FERPA privacy laws.

Fall testing is underway - you will receive MAP and/or AIMSWeb reports by the end of September. During Parent/Teacher conferences (November 2nd & 3rd) you'll discuss with teachers how your child is progressing - and we look forward to another year partnering with you for their success!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Everett

Mat Su Virtual School

Next week, students at school will be starting to learn the new Mat Su Virtual School courses. Students are placed into a course appropriate to their skill level based on data from last year and this year's new fall data. The Instructional Coach, Jody Stewart, works with teachers to monitor student progress and provide intervention or more challenge as needed. They will not be on the computer all day at school; some time will be spent working in their online courses and some time will be spent working directly with the teacher. Parents will also be able to see how their child is doing in their courses - more information will be coming out in the next couple weeks to let you know how to log in and view their progress.

Parent's Right to Know Letter

Each year, districts and schools are required to provide information to parents as well as opportunities for them to be involved in the educational decisions that affect their children. Parents have the right to inquire about the professional qualifications of their child’s teacher and paraprofessionals that work with the child. This information is explained to parents in this letter, which will also be available on our website under the Home Connection tab at the top of our homepage.

Title I - Family Engagement Events

Next week we will be sending out more information about upcoming Family Engagement Events. They will look a little different this year and be less crowded but still fun! Stay tuned.
