The Importance of Internet Safety
Over the last couple of days, the district has received several inquiries regarding the Momo Challenge. The Momo Challenge allegedly contacts through social media and challenges the user to perform a series of risky activities ultimately leading to suicide. First, this challenge is considered by technology experts to be a hoax that took on a life of its own after going viral on social media. However, the concern around this topic does offer an opportunity to communicate the importance of supervising our children’s Internet use and reminding children never to engage with strangers online or accept online challenges. Children should feel comfortable to report anything they see online that makes them feel unsafe to a trusted adult.
Please also know that each elementary school provides comprehensive cybersafety instruction in age-appropriate ways at each grade level through our library curriculum. We also offer online resources for parents to keep up with the latest information about Internet safety in the home at https://www.wcasd.net/Page/837. We have included additional resources regarding the Momo Challenge for your information.
The Internet can be a tremendous resource to enhance the education of our students. It is a shared responsibility to assure that we provide children the guidance they need to build their confidence in using the Internet safely, appropriately, and productively. We take this responsibility very seriously, and we stand ready to support our families in this effort.
1 in 10 children experience sexual abuse before age 18. Over 90% of children know their abuser. We can change that.
