Principal Perspective - Mission: Possible
We are here for you! We have hit a few bumps on this digital highway, so I am offering some solutions to common tech issues we've had this week. Of course, if you are still having trouble, give us a call. If we can't fix it, we will ask you to write a helpdesk ticket.
If you have an old Chromebook from last year, and it is giving you problems, we will get is swapped ASAP. Just give us a call and we'll let you know when a new one is ready for you to pick up.
Our goal is to teach students to independently access their learning each day. Although it may be a struggle to get there, it will be worth it in the end when they can do it. Please support us by allowing them to struggle a bit, encouraging them to problem solve on their own, and praising their independence.
Finally, we are moving toward having all students access Zoom with their authenticated BSD Zoom account. For those with Chromebooks, this happens when they log in. Below are instructions how to log into a BSD account on an ipad. These authenticated accounts provide more security to our meetings, display student names for staff and allow teachers to pre-make breakout rooms. If you are available the next time your child logs in, please take a few minutes to get them on this account. Once you do it once, the device will should remember the login. Thanks!
Setting up a BSD Zoom account
Using your child's BSD Zoom account is more secure, and allows them to save a screen name so teachers and classmates can see it. It also allows students to access class zoom links with just a click. Here's how to set it up If you need your username and password, you can view it on ParentVue (Student Info->Additional Information->Other data) or contact your child's teacher.
Resetting an ipad if needed
Resetting (wiping) the iPad (needed if an app, like Dreambox, is missing):
- Open the Settings app
- Go to General
- Scroll down to Reset
- Choose Erase all Contents and Settings and agree to the confirmation pop-ups.
- Wait for the iPad to present the Hello setup assistant screen
- Press the home button and choose your language and country
- Connect to your home Wi-Fi when prompted.
- Continue to press the Next button in the top right corner to get through the setup assistant
- Once complete simply wait for the apps to load and contact us if the apps don’t complete loading within an hour.
News from the Library
It was soooo wonderful to see so many new and old faces last week! I hope your first week of CDL has gone smoothly.
We are very excited that Ridgewood is offering curbside pick-up and drop off for library materials. To pick up materials you must first put a book on hold in Destiny (our online catalog).This video above shows you how to do that. When your book is ready for pick up you will receive an email with instructions on when you may come pick it up.
BOOK BUNDLES: Not sure what to read?
Fill out the form below and Mrs. Bergin will put together a book bundle based on your responses. There is even a choice to receive a surprise bundle! Allow 2-3 days upon filling out this form. You will then receive an email with instructions when to come pick up your books.
Keep a lookout for more information for our Book mobile coming to a stop near you. Mrs. Bergin will be delivering surprise book bundles on a school bus beginning in early October. Stay tuned for more information about this.

Internet Access Tips from a fellow parent
I do technology and software for a living. You are 100% correct that zoom "lagging", (actually called frame spooling) is typically caused by connection issues. Major contributors to frame spooling are also:
Upload bandwidth too small
- Most people focus on "download bitrate." For Zoom to operate at its finest, you need a good "upload bitrate" also. Anything below 5Mbps UP for a household could cause spooling with multiple Zoom calls running.
- We don't need HD Zoom calls. Turn that off. Zoom Preferences -> Video - > disable "Enable HD"
- Also disable "Touch up my appearance", that uses way too much CPU cycles to constantly analyze the input from the camera. If your computer is CPU or RAM bound (out of free CPU cycles or memory) that can also cause spooling or "frame catchup"
- This will just eat up CPU and bandwidth. Computer video software is smart enough only to change the pixels that have changed from frame to frame. If you have a zoom background that is playing a video you're actually unnecessarily changing thousands of pixels every second that you don't necessarily need. That will also use up network resources because you are moving more video content that n you need to.
- This is extremely complicated, so please bear with me for a minute... but it boils down to home wireless radio frequency bandwidth. When you have simple WiFi repeaters in rooms, which are are super handy, those repeaters are typically using the same radio frequency as the rest of wireless backbone the computers use to talk with the network. That can result in eating up bandwidth for the repeater to talk with the wireless access point/gateway. While that might make sense that a repeater is a good thing, it can do more damage than good if the repeater is having troubles talking (called handshaking) with the base station. Those "handshakes" to the base station can slow the already crowded home network. A meshed network does that differently. The meshed satellites (like a repeater) communicate to the base station via a different radio frequency, thereby leaving the critical frequency to the computers as quiet as possible. We have a meshed network at Catherine's home and rarely have network issues. These are more expensive, but worth every penny when we had 6 kids all on Zoom Monday morning, as well as my computer (I work from home and am on Zoom most of the day).
- An example of a meshed network system is here. We have this unit and have a large home with only this base station and 2 satellites, over 100% wireless saturation. I'm sure the network specialists at the school district can help with specific advice for families who need help.
