An IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MRS. HETZLER- NETTLES about PASSES
A few gentle reminders and some answers to questions that have come up with our pass expectations and tardy table.
As teachers, everyone needs to be mindful of the time as we Work as a Community. Holding students back or not releasing them in time for the bell to make it to their next class on time undermines their next teacher’s effectiveness. I have asked everyone to start their classes when the bell rings. If, as a teacher, you are releasing late, then you are undermining a peer by keeping students out of their class on time so they can get their lesson started. I am seeing a lot of all-school emails to “please excuse my 5th period for being tardy,” etc…Please do not do this. Set a timer, use an app, etc…and ensure that you class is ending in time for students to leave at the bell.
I understand that there might be times where you keep one student back for something or are having a conversation with a student about something and need to send them with a pass to a class. Again, please try to not do this, as it undermines the effectiveness of their next teacher and removes them from essential learning from that class. There will be emergency situations, but this should not be a habit as we Work as a Community!
If you are limiting your passes you should have started fresh by giving students at least 2 passes between now and when we go on winter break. You should not count passes already used by students prior to this mandate as that is not fair to them. Please be mindful of being consistent and fair.
There are to be NO PASSES during Club time!
Reading Endorsement Courses
Each year Pasco County Schools offers five reading endorsement courses to provide our teachers an opportunity to develop their knowledge about reading and add the endorsement to their teaching certificate. In order to receive the endorsement, teachers complete courses that develop their understanding of the foundations of language, research of best practices, assessment, and differentiation in reading, as well as complete a semester-long practicum. Once all five courses are successfully completed, teachers can add the endorsement to their certificate. Attached is a document that lists the courses offered in 2018, their myPGS course number, and details about dates that the courses run for the winter/spring semester. Please share this with anyone who may be interested in your buildings.
If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Hatten.

Important Semester Exam and Winter Retake Information
Ideas for Friday December 22nd
Friday December 22nd is an excellent day to remind students of the journey they have been on in your classroom this semester and make connections to where they are headed in Semester 2.
Provide students with a list of major topics from 1st semester (or ask them to generate the list). In small teams, have students make a representation (concept map, diagram/image, skit, rap, etc.) that shows how these topics are connected. Once they have represented Semester 1, provide them with some of the big topics coming in Semester 2 and see where they may place or connect these new ideas. This provides a ‘big picture’ review of their learning so far while previewing where they are headed and how it connects. I used this in my Biology classes and called it ‘The story so far…”. It was always amazing to see how creatively students could show the journey we had been on so far. Displaying and revisiting the teams work in January is a great way to start Semester 2.
Another idea is to use the HOWL expectations to have the students reflect on their own learning in your class over Semester 1. Ask them to review their notebook/work to find evidence of the HOWL expectations in the work you engaged in as a class. A quick graphic organizer can help them to think about how the HOWL expectations live in their way of work while allowing them to review the big ideas of Semester 1 and reflect. Finally, ask them to set a goal for Semester 2 based on one of the HOWL expectations. Remind them to use evidence from your course and their own work.
District Finals
Semester courses have a District Final that must be administered at the end of the semester. Several courses have a district created final (ex. All PE classes, MS Art 2D, Exploratory Spanish, etc.) while other semester courses will have a teacher-created final that should be principal-approved. The District requires that HS students have 80 minutes to complete their final within a 90-minute period and MS students have 50 minutes to complete their final. This will require that we have an alternate exam schedule on 12/19, 12/20 and 12/21. I have uploaded the complete list of courses with District Finals or Principal approved finals to the Assessment folder in SharePoint.
Quarterly Checks
We will utilize the exam schedule on 12/19, 12/20 and 12/21 to complete Quarterly Checks for Quarter 2. The extended time during the testing period will allow us to meet all extended time accommodations within the class period. ELA and HS Math will continue to be given on the computer while Science and Social Studies will be paper-based.
To meet the computer requirements for completing District Finals and Quarterly checks at the same time (minimizing the number of days on an alternate schedule), we will need to use nearly all computers on campus. I will be working on the schedule and reaching out to those teachers who have dedicated computer labs in the next week.
Winter Retakes
Winter Retakes
The Winter window for FSA EOC Retakes begins on November 27th. This includes Algebra (11/28 & 11/29), Geometry (11/30 & 12/4), Biology (11/30), US History (12/4) and Civics (12/4). Students who have not yet passed the EOCs or who have not yet taken it, but have completed the course will be identified to test. The specific dates are posted on the Assessment calendar (https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=YjFuaXJ2ajk1dDAxZnBtZmc2NGtyZ2hyMGdAZ3JvdXAuY2FsZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbQ). We should be receiving the scores from the Fall retake window soon. Those scores will impact who is on the roster to test during the winter window. I will post the rosters in the Assessment section of SharePoint as soon as we have the updated lists.
