Message from the Principal
Comedian Michael Jr once stated, “When you know your 'why' then your 'what' has more impact, because you're working towards your purpose.” Last year our Salem Woods staff took time to write out why we do what we do. The word heart above highlights the most frequent ideas in the purpose of our staff.
From our instructional staff to our recess team who teach practical lessons teamwork and problem solving to our food services, office, and custodial teams who keep our school safe and ready for kids’ learning, our Salem Woods staff have students at the heart of what we do. I am so thankful for this amazing team who inspire, love, and learn with our students.
Next week, May 3rd-7th, Salem Woods will be celebrating all of our staff as a part of the National Educator/Teacher Appreciation Week. We invite you to join us in appreciating our staff.
As part of our week, we will be celebrating with these optional Spirit Days:
Monday, May 3rd - Sports Day (wear sports memorabilia and/or workout clothes)
Tuesday, May 4th - Star Wars Day (wear a Star Wars or space t-shirt or hat to celebrate May the 4th with us)
Wednesday, May 5th - Character Day (wear something with cartoon, Disney, or a book character on it)
Thursday, May 6th - School Colors Day (wear Salem Woods blue)
Friday, May 7th - Silly Hat/Hair Day (wear a silly hat or hairstyle to your class zoom)
Whether you participate in the spirit days or not, the most meaningful appreciation is a note or picture from you and/or your student. If you would like to drop something off for a staff member, please do so at the front office and we will gladly help deliver it for you. Due to current health and safety guidelines, home-made treats cannot be distributed.
We are also thankful for each of you as you partner in this work with us. Thank you for stepping up and supporting your children with their learning. We appreciate you!
Warmly,
Stephanie

Digital Learning News
Canvas.Apps.Chrome
This week we are trying something new - the Canvas.Apps in Chrome (not to be confused with Canvas learning management system that has all of our asynchronous lessons), is a drawing app used in the Chrome browser. Students can use different brushes and colors to try their hand at online drawing. Students are asked to share their creations on the Padlet (include student and teacher names for credit).
Digital Citizenship
Please continue to remind your student to ensure they are practicing good digital citizenship while they are online. Students should be careful about using Google search and ensure that they are following our district policies - searches that could contain questionable content are flagged and sent to individual schools for investigation.
Office Hours
Office Hours for 4/30 have been cancelled.

MSD COVID - 19 Writing Contest
Monroe School District students,
What has school been like during the COVID-19 pandemic? The Monroe community wants to hear from YOU!
Each year, the Monroe School District mails a community newsletter to all homes within the district’s boundaries (see past editions here). That’s over 16,000 mailboxes! The purpose of these newsletters is to share information and positive news about our schools, students and staff with all community members.
This past year of school hasn’t been like any other before and we want to share YOUR first-hand accounts of what it has been like as students in the next edition of our community newsletter. Many of our community members don’t have students in school and are very curious what school has been like for students this past year. Therefore, we are inviting all students to submit a writing piece that may be featured both in the printed newsletter and on our website. At least three entries will be selected, including one from the elementary (K-5), middle (6-8), and high school (9-12) grade levels.
Writing Prompt:
You are living through history. Future historians may look back on the journals, essays and poetry that ordinary people, like you, are creating now to tell the story of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Imagine 100 years have passed and it’s now the year 2121. Historians are looking back on a piece of your writing that describes what school was like during the pandemic of 2020-21. In an essay, journal entry, poem, news article or any form of creative writing, describe what school has been like for you as a student during the pandemic.
Writing submissions will only be accepted from students who are currently enrolled in the Monroe School District. Submissions must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Not all submissions will be featured in the community newsletter and/or district website. If you have questions, please email communications@monroe.wednet.edu.
