Fecal Transplant PSA
A new and strange cure for intestinal diseases!
What are Fecal Transplants?
What is the point?
If the colon is lacking in good bacteria, it causes the not so good ones to over-populate, such as C. difficile (Clostridium difficile), causing infection.
What is Clostridium difficile?
C. difficile is a harmless bacteria kept in line by the other harmless bacteria until those bacteria get killed by antibiotics, causing C. diff to over-populate. Appearing mostly in the elderly and young children, C. difficile has a high resistance to antibiotics, and was estimated to cause almost half a million infections in the United States in 2011, and 29,000 dying within 30 days of the initial diagnosis. It is spread by spores that are released into the air by feces, relying on feces-oral contact. It is highly contagious, providing an avenue into your gut.
The most effective treatment for C. difficile is fecal transplants, having a 90%- 95% success rate.
Once infection has started, the effects that occur are:
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Loss in weight
- Tenderness
- Abdominal Pain
- Loss of appitite
Harmless C. Difficile
