In 1815, The Battle of New Orleans established Andrew Jackson as a hero.
"Jacksonian Democracy" (expanded suffrage)
Andrew Jackson was the first, other than Virginia and Massachusetts, western elected president. He proudly declared himself to be the "Champion of the Common Man" and believed that the interest were being ignored by the forceful economic plans of Adams and Clay.
Killing the National Bank
On September 10, 1833, President Andrew Jackson shut down the National Bank. President Jackson is proud of destroying the National Bank. Alexander Hamilton and George Washington were the first to create the National Bank in 1719 to serve as a central repository for the federal funds.
"Trail of Tears"
In the early 1830s, about 125,000 Native Americans live on a big area of land in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and North Carolina. The Native Americans had to leave their homelands and walk thousands of miles to an "Indian territory" because the white settlers wanted to grow cotton, so they were forced to leave.
Nullification Crisis
In the late 1820s, the south was very agricultural and the industry was increasing. Congress passed a high protective tariff that upset the southern states in 1828 because the southern states felt that it only helped the industrialized north.
