Universal Screener
As we have done for the past four school years, we will once again be administering the Universal Screener with our students both this fall and this spring. This short, voluntary questionnaire asks students how they are feeling (happy, sad, etc.), if they have someone at school and/or at home they can talk to if they have a problem, if they have healthy coping skills, and if they want to talk with their school counselor. We also provide students with information on healthy living and they can select items they would like to learn more about, such as what to do if they feel overwhelmed or stressed, things to do to feel more calm, what to do if they are angry or mad at someone, or things to do if they are feeling lonely. The information collected will help our school counseling team identify areas in which they can further support our students.
The fall administration of the Universal Screener will take place September 11-September 29. Please note that this questionnaire will not be completed by our kindergarteners. If you have any questions about the questionnaire or its purpose, please contact your child’s school counselor.
Fall Growth Assessments
In accordance with legislation passed by the General Assembly that requires students in grades three through eight be assessed for growth in math and reading, we will continue to administer both fall and winter growth assessments this coming school year. This year’s growth assessments will primarily measure content from the student’s previous grade level.
While they are not considered SOL assessments, these exams will be similar in format (and shorter in length) to the spring SOL tests and are meant to provide a foundation for us to help guide planning and instruction. Please note that students will not receive a passing or failing grade on these assessments and parents will be able to access their student’s report on the parent portal maintained by the Virginia Department of Education. Your student’s log in information and claim code can be found on your PowerSchool parent portal.

Attendance Reminders
When your child is absent, we must receive communication within three days of the absence for it to be recorded as "excused." Absences that are not substantiated by a note or phone call to the office within three days of the absence will remain "unexcused."
- At 5 unexcused absences, you will be contacted to develop an attendance plan to resolve attendance concerns
- At 7 unexcused absences, an attendance conference will be held to discuss continued attendance concerns
- If attendance does not improve, a referral may be made to School Social Work Services for additional support
Tardy Students:
Parents, please remember that if your child is late (after 8:00 a.m.) you will need to come into the office to sign them in on the designated form. Your child will receive a tardy pass which they will give to their teacher upon arrival to class.
