Closure Update 4-2-2020
The Governor announced yesterday afternoon that all schools would be closed for the remainder of the school year. This is very disappointing, as we truly miss being at school and seeing our students on a daily basis. However, we do understand that the health and safety for all should be our number one priority at this time.
As you are fully aware, these are unprecedented times and, just like you, we have many more questions than we have answers. As a school system, we are actively working with the Office of the Governor and Georgia Department of Education to gain guidance and direction. We will continue to update you as we learn any new information that might impact you and/or your child. Even though we are forced to accept this as our new normal, we will continue to work extremely hard to stay true to our vision and mission that speaks to excellence, success and continuous improvement.
Even during a time like this Bryan County Schools continues to be a leader in the state and country, due to the talented and dedicated faculty and staff of this amazing organization. In less than a weeks’ time, the faculty and staff were able to study and create a virtual learning environment for all students that is allowing us to stay true to our core business of “Teaching and Learning”. No, it is not perfect, and as we say, “we are building this plane as we fly it.” But, the teachers, parents and staff have done an amazing job of working as partners to support the educational and social-emotional needs of children.
With that being said, below is a timeline of events:
- March 13th – End of 3rd nine weeks
- March 16th – Governor closed all school, effective March 18th
- March 16th to March 20th – Schools distributed almost 8,000 Chrome Books, finalized virtual learning plans in preparation for Digital Learning Days that began March 23rd, and School Food Nutrition finalized plans to feed students while away from school
- March 23rd – Digital Learning Days, Meals on the Bus, and Curbside Meal Service began
- April 3rd – The Meals on the Bus and Curbside Meal Service will have served over 50,000 meals
- April 6th to April 10th – Spring Break
- April 13th – Digital Learning Days, Meals on the Bus, and Curbside Meal Service begins again
- May 21st – Last day of school
Graduation – Richmond Hill High School and Bryan County High School desperately want to celebrate and recognize the Class of 2020, through some type of formal graduation ceremony. Many times high school graduation is the pinnacle of a student’s educational journey, and the Class of 2020 remains very important to all of us. Even so, it is vital for us to consider that each of our two graduation ceremonies held at the Savannah Civic Center usually have four to six thousand in attendance. Therefore, with the unknown impact of COVID-19, we have been researching alternative methods for these events. We will notify parents and students once we have decided on a graduation ceremony that meets the needs of our students, while also abiding by the health and safety guidelines of the nation, state and community.
If you still have a need for food during Spring Break, please reach out to one of our following community partners that will be available to assist families in both north and south Bryan during this time:
- Bryan County Family Connections 912-653-3824
- United Way of Coastal Empire for Bryan County 912-651-7750
As the safety and health of all students, staff and our community continue to be the top priorities of Bryan County Schools, please continue to follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with local, regional and national health agencies regarding COVID-19. Thank you for your commitment to your families, Bryan County Schools, and the amazing community where we reside.
