Media Center News
Spring has been very busy in the Concrete Library. Last month first and second graders voted for their favorite South Carolina Book Award Nominees. Our school winner was Bobbie the Wonder Dog. I sent those votes into the State Contest. The State winner was Quit Calling Me Monster. Below are next year’s nominees. I encourage you and your child to check out these books and read them together. We have several copies in our library, and you can also find them in Powdersville Public Library. They are wonderful books to read and discuss with your child. Hope every springs into some great books this month! A NOTE FROM OUR READING COACH
Thank you! - We had a fabulous time and a huge turnout at Literacy Night last month. Thank you to all of the families who were able to come and join in the fun! We can’t wait to do it again next year.
Reading Tip - To strengthen reading comprehension, it is important to ask your child questions as you are reading together. Be sure to ask a variety of “within the text” questions, whose answers are found right in the book, and “beyond the text” questions, whose answers have to be inferred from the story. See some examples below:
Within the Text questions: Who is outside on the playground? Where is Biscuit? What did Frog just do?
Beyond the Text questions: Why do you think he said that? Why was Frog sad? Where do you think Biscuit will go next?
$1 Book Store - The $1 book store will be open April 11th this month. It will be held from 7:20-8:00 in Mrs. Porter’s room. All books are only $1! This is the Thursday before Spring Break. Be sure to stop by and grab a good book to read over the break.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Porter
BE FANTASTIC UPDATE
The school year is quickly coming to an end and our students continue to showcase our BE FANTASTIC essentials around the school. Classes caught with FANTASTIC behavior have earned tickets throughout each school day. Ten tickets are then exchanged for a cricket to be displayed in the hallway.
With the welcomed arrival of warmer temperatures, each class that earned 10 crickets during the third nine weeks received extra recess time to celebrate. The homeroom class with the most crickets for each grade level also earned a special surprise.
The following classrooms earned the most crickets for the third nine weeks: Mrs. Callaham’s K5 class, Mrs. Howard’s first grade class, and Mrs. Kellett’s second grade class. Congratulations to these classes as well as to all classes that earned 10 crickets and extra recess time.
Good luck to all classes as they continue to earn shields for the fourth nine weeks!
