Sorrick Family Focus
Week of September 16, 2019
Weekly Update
Dear Families,
This week, our Sorrick students will participate in a bus evacuation drill. This mandatory drill teaches students how to quickly and safely evacuate from a bus in an emergency situation. Even if your child is not a bus rider, this drill is important for all students so that they are prepared when riding a bus to and from field trips. We have also been practicing fire safety in recent weeks. Our Sorrick Cougars have done a fantastic job learning to line up quietly and exit the school when they hear the alarm. We always spend time talking to students about these drills in advance so that they are not afraid. Looking for some great books to read at home to help your child feel well prepared? Check out Staying Safe at School by Thomas Kingsley Troupe or Clifford the Firehouse Dog by Norman Bridwell at the Green Hills Library!
Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee Meeting
Are you the parent of an English Learner? Please join us on Wednesday, September 25th from 12:00 - 1:00 PM to learn more about our programs for English Learners and hear about our Parent Advisory Committee. The mission of the Parent Advisory Committee is for parents and school district staff to work together to meet the needs of our multilingual students and their families. The meeting will be held at the Dr. Ken Geraghty Administration Center, 7825 W. 103rd Street, Palos Hills. Refreshments will be served and translators will be available. We’re excited to gather our community of multilingual parents!
ESSA Right To Know
On December 10, 2015, President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law. ESSA replaces the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). In accordance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), school districts who receive Title I funds to support students’ academic success are required to notify families they have the right to request, and receive in a timely manner, information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers. Please see our letter for more information.
Have a great week!
