The Star
Ruby Bridges - where the STARS come to shine!
Hello from the principal's desk!
9/20/2017
Hello all! We just had our first PTA meeting of the year last night, and let me say, I am IMPRESSED! Our PTA board is excellent, and should be applauded for their dedication to improving our school. I also must applaud the turnout from our general membership. Although there are probably a lot of other things to do with your Tuesday night, it is great to know that so many of you prioritize your child's school with your precious time! Please see their note lower in The Star for ways you can help in the upcoming Fun-a-Thon. Lastly, we have 96 members for PTA, we are 4 away from the goal we set earlier in the year to get 100 families. P L E A S E, join. They do such good work for our school!
I have a big ask. Please take literally 1 minute and take this survey to nominate our School Site Council (SSC) parents. The SSC makes important decisions about our school goals and funding. Our first meeting is coming up next week, you are welcome to sit in and observe if you'd like. Please take the survey here.
In other news - Mr. Lundholm made a gif of me dancing. This was after hours, so not to worry that we were being silly while school was in session.
With gratitude,
Jesse Woodward

- Lunch supervision - Let's see how else I can say this to get some more folks to agree to help... hmmm... I have paid positions for grandmas and grandpas, aunts or uncles, big brothers or big sisters who want to be here at school and participate in the lunch time fun! It doesn't pay much, but it pays something and it is a job if someone is looking for one. I can be an awesome reference if you put in some good time with us! Maybe you just want to come in and volunteer when you have time? That works too. Your kids will love to see you here on campus! Come help!
Hello from STEAM Lab
WOOHOO! Our flex seating project for the Studio (401) on Donors Choose was fully funded! I am so ecstatic with the BIG NEWS! Providing students with a variety of seating options is one huge part of the shift to student autonomy in the Studio that I will be striving for. In other news, the LAB (402) has been completely overhauled with the HUGE helping (and strong) hands of Ms. Furuichi-Fong in moving all the furniture with me! Our backs are sore but it was well worth it! Also, a big shout-out to Mr. LaBarre for moving over many of the FOSS kits for easier teacher setup for coming lessons, as well as to Mr. Manalisay, as he puts some finishing touches on the LAB by carving out display space for each grade level. The LAB will be set to open for teachers on 9/26 to teach Mystery Science, FOSS, STEAM lessons, or do other kinds of experiments! That’s all for now J

Hello from the Ruby Bridges PTA
Join the PTA and have fun while helping your kids and your community. Our students need us!
The PTA plans to spend on average $15 per student for field trips this year. Help us make this possible by donating to and/or joining the PTA.
Come out and have fun wiht your kids while raising money for our school! Our 3rd annual Fun-A-Thon will be held at Ruby Bridges Elementary on October 14th from 9-12. Kids will have a chance to win prizes including Amazon Kindles, scooters, and Target gift cards. Admission is free for Ruby Bridges students and $10 for non-Ruby Bridges students. Come out and have some fun with us!
We need your help to make the Fun-A-Thon run smoothly! Please sign up for a spot to help out on the day of the event. Some spots require you to come early (8-830 am) and some spots require you to stay after the day is over (1 pm). Sign up using this link: http://signup.com/go/jGwFHtt

5th grade Science camp
Alas, this trip is expensive! We are asking each 5th grade family to pay $280 for the trip. As you may know, this cost can be prohibitive for some of our families. We will offer scholarships as needed, and fundraising opportunities will be available to participate in if your family is unable to contribute financially
PTA is going to hold the money for us, so cut your checks now - payable to Ruby Bridges PTA, with Science camp and your child's name in the Memo line. It would be amazing if you also included a few extra dollars to help us with the scholarship costs. Let's make this once in a lifetime opportunity for these kids a reality, and ensure we do this for future classes.
Sincerely,
The 5th grade team (Mr. Landers, Ms. Farrell, Mrs. Figueroa and Mrs. Watty) & Mr. Woodward
STAR rotations - where every Star gets to shine!
Please note, these Reading and English Language rotations are not new, these programs have been in place at Ruby Bridges since we opened 11 years ago. We can always use an extra set of hands, so if you are interested in volunteering your time to work with a small group of kids during this time, please let me know.
I am very excited to see these groups get started early next month!

Remind
Have you noticed any strange numbers sending you texts from school? That is our new Remind notification system! You can download their app from the app store - when school started they were the #1 app in iTunes! The app scrambles our numbers, so we aren't sharing our personal numbers with you all. But it allows us to easily send texts, pictures and even call you if we need to. It is pretty cool, and certainly makes it easier for us to share information with you all.
