Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 2 - Issue 7

A word from Mr Broom.

Firstly, may I apologise for the late delivery of this week's Echo. I was otherwise engaged in Nursery for the morning. I must admit, I had a wonderful time with our youngest learners in school and they were full of surprises! My visit to EYFS finished off a two week stint of teaching every class. We have wonderful children at Sherburn Hungate and I'm proud to work with them all.

We seem to have had nothing but things to celebrate this week. Our Early Years and KS1 nativities were a real spectacle and I for one, thoroughly enjoyed them. You know Christmas is upon us when the nativity's begin! Our Y5/6 children also created their own Art Exhibition on Wednesday with members of the public bidding for what can only be described as sensational art work.

Meanwhile in school, our teachers have been working hard with our new tracking and assessment system and we have our first round of progress meetings next week. I'm really looking forward to seeing how much progress our children have made. I get the impression I'm going to be amazed!

A quick reminder that there is still an opportunity to apply for a reception place for September 2018. If you've yet to submit your application form, then please do so.

Please note that even if your child is in our Nursery, you must still apply for a place.

Clubs Cancelled Next Week

Clubs for the Autumn Term are now completed and wont run next week with it being the build up to the end of term. We will be restarting in the first week back.

Our Special Achievers this Week!

Our special achievers this week include Mrs Allen-Warren, Mrs Fitch & Mrs Middleton who were rightly recognised for incredible support and contributions towards the Art Exhibition in Year 5/6.

Warm Coats a Must!

Probably obvious one, but please ensure your child comes to school with a warm coat in these cold weather months.

Lost Property

If you think your child has any items of uniform missing, please check the lost property as we will be emptying the box at the end of term.

Bad Weather School Closure Information

As we enter the cold spells of the winter period, we may at some point need to take the decision to close the school. Rest assured that we will do everything possible to keep school open so long as it is safe to do so.

If the decision is taken to close school, we will communicate this via:

- ParentPay Text Message (so please ensure your details are up-to-date).

- The School Website (

- Special Newsletter (via email)

- BBC Radio York (103.7, 104.3 & 95.5 FM)

- The BBC North Yorkshire Website (

If you hear nothing from us on these forms of communication, please consider school to be open as normal.

Bring & Buy for Young Voices

As we close in on the Christmas period, I'd like to make you aware of the Bring & Buy sale that our Y5/6 will be holding in the new year. This is in aid of their trip to Sheffield Arena for the Young Voices concert 2018!

If you're having a clear out before or over the Christmas period, please consider this.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 5 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 96.7%.

As you can see below, our attendance in some classes is above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.

The overall attendance this week is 93.3% and is below national averages. Many of our children have had illness this week but I'm hoping we will bounce back for our final week.

Sherburn-in-Elmet Lions Club

I met with the Elmet Lions Club on Wednesday to talk about how they could support our school and how our school could become involved in their community work. A couple of points of information:

- The usual Lions' Santa Sleigh will be touring the streets of Sherburn over the coming weeks, starting on Monday.

- The Lions are collecting used Spectacles (not cases) so if you have any in the bottom of a draw (irrespective of condition) please bring them into school before Wednesday 20th December. These will be sent to parts of the third world.

If Elmet Lions is something you would like to get involved in, please email Ann at
