Message from Superintendent Elstad
How is it that the calendar has already flipped to May? After a long and trying winter, it is good to feel the warmth of the sun! The school year is quickly drawing to a close on June 6 and with spring comes a busy time of year in our schools. As we near the end of our school year, I pause to reflect on how fortunate I am to work with, and to serve, a great staff of dedicated educators and a supportive community. However, it is seeing our amazing students that really fuels my passion for this work.
On Wednesday, I took part in the signing day ceremony for our students who are a part of our Steele Co. Works initiative. These are students who have taken advantage of a great partnership between the United Way of Steele County, Owatonna Chamber of Commerce and Owatonna Public Schools. Seeing the smiles and promises of a bright future in our workforce as they sign their agreements to different workplaces warms my heart. This would not be possible without the generosity of our business community and their willingness to help our students make a successful transition.
This week, I was also in our elementary classrooms during reading time. It’s the “aha” moments that get me every time, like the moment you see a student realize their own success at reading and the smile they get on their face. You cannot take that moment of euphoria away from them, ever. I was so happy I was able to get to experience that with them and be a part of the high-fives all around.
I’m lucky to be Owatonna’s superintendent and have a front row seat at all these great learning experiences. Please join me and attend any of our school performances, open houses or other events. You won’t be disappointed. And you’ll see first-hand how strong schools build strong communities.
Steele Co Works Signing Day... Congratulations to all.
