Wich materials
affect more the potency of the wifi signal?
Background research
Frequencies of wifi: 2,4GHz or 5GHz wifis exist. The most popular are 2,4GHz wifis.
Basic elements for a wifi system: Router, network adapter...
What’re GHz? It measures cicles per second.
In wich units do do we can measure the wifi potency? In dBm.
What’re dBm? It measures potyency (dB) per mW.
What’s the noise level? It’s the amount of noise frequencies in a zone. It can be formed of microwave ovens, wirless videocameras, fluorescents, bluetooth devices…
Why do we obtain negative numbers (in dBm) when we’re measuring the wifi potency? We obtain negative numbers because it’s a logarithm and the wifi potency isn’t enought to obtain a positive number.
Hypothesis
Experiment
1-Place the router at 5 meters of the wifi signal measurer. (image 1)
2-Cover the wifi router antenas with diferent materials.
3-Measure the wifi potency with all the materials, and repeat that process six times.Router covered with aluminium paper
Router covered with plastic
Router covered with cotton clothes
Conclusion
I’ve obtain different results with the same thickness in all materials, so the hypothesis is false. The potency is affected by the type of material. It is a good idea to do an other science project testing if the thickness of the material affect too (i think that yes, but it’s an other experiment). With that results we can draw the next conclusions. If we sorround the router with cotton clothes, plastics, paper…, we’ll decrease the wifi signal only a little bit. If we sorround the router of wood, stones, airon…, we will decrease the wifi a little more. If we place the router with people surrounding it (in the middle of a hall were people wait, etc.) we’ll have a bad signal. If we place the wifi router with aluminium paper surrouding we’ll recieve the worst wifi potency (of the materials that we have experimented). So, we have to avoid placing between our router and our computer, mobile device, tablet, etc., aluminium and people.
