Welcome to Week 4 newsletter. We have lots of relevant information each fortnight and we thank you for taking the time to read our newsletters.

We have had a busy fortnight with weekly sports, a sports exchange with Waitara Central, a visit from Student Leaders from Inglewood High School speaking with our young Year 8s about how to make the transition and gain success when entering Year 9 at High School to name a few.

Our Board of Trustees met in Week 3 and approved an updated lease agreement with Ricoh involving; new photocopiers, new chromebooks, 3D printers and a laser cutter. The BoT also awarded our Staff Scholarship to seven staff who applied to increase their knowledge in different areas of education, increasing their capability and capacity to improve educational outcomes for tamariki. We are grateful for a forward thinking Board of Trustees.

Property

Puke Haupapa Upgrade

We have been given the green light to get Stage 2 of the Puke Haupapa upgrade underway. This has meant that all four classes have been relocated within our kura as a temporary measure to try to assist with a speedy construction timeline. The Stage 2 project involves installing glass sliding doors between teaching spaces and also the learning lane, new carpet and vinyl, some new and relocation of heating, and a deck between Puke Haupapa and Tokomaru to name a few.

This project we are hoping will be completed mid-way through Term 3. We thank all staff, tamariki and whānau for their patience.

Driveway Access

As you will have seen we are nearing completion of our fencing and new gate system within our school grounds. We are providing fencing and a controlled gate to strengthen the safety of tamariki within the school grounds.

The new fencing and gate system means that there will be VERY limited access to vehicles.

The automatic gate will be closed from 0815 - 1510. For certain vehicles access up to the office or classrooms can be gained through a code entered into the keypsad or the Office providing access through an intercom system.

New Car Park project

At the moment the majority of staff park within the existing carpark between Te Moa (the Hall) and our swimming pool. We as a Board of Trustees are working on moving this carpark to the old tennis / basketball courts on the right hand side of the driveway as you head in. We are developing a space for 22 car parks which will cater for staff and visitors. This work will be undertaken in June / July.

We are grateful for the work being undertaken by HelRimu, Tui Landscaping, Aotea Security, JW Security, Burgess & Crowley construction and ACG Property Services around this project in conjunction with our Board of Trustees and Ministry of Education

Attendance

ew insights from an Education Review Office (ERO) study have found one of the biggest drivers for pupils being absent from school is their parents. ERO Education Evaluation Centre head Ruth Shinoda said in 2022, only two out of five pupils were regularly going to school. “The Covid-19 pandemic had a big impact on attendance, but even before the pandemic, attendance was low and falling,” she said. "We have found that many parents don’t value going to school regularly, and this really matters.” ERO found that four in 10 parents are comfortable with their child missing a week or more of school a term. This matters. Their research reveals that parents who are comfortable with their child missing school are more than twice as likely to have a child who misses school regularly. The level of absenteeism at Inglewood Primary School is nowhere near as bad as the national statistic cited above, but we have genuine concerns about an increasing number of students being absent. We are not resourced to address the issue and, in the end, the responsibility of attendance rests largely with parents. The attendance and engagement strategy announced by the government last month is a well-intended initiative but will have little impact in our community because of what we currently do to support student attendance. Ms Shinoda said the study showed when parents let children miss school on a particular day, for example to avoid an activity, children were more likely to miss school regularly: "Letting children miss school sometimes can shape their attitudes to going to school. It is really important that children see going to school every day as important. A third of children do not, and the research shows this makes them more likely to miss school." She said it was clear

parental attitudes needed to shift. Schools cannot solve the attendance crisis alone, but they can help parents to understand the impact of missing school and how often their children are going to school. Schools can also help by focusing on the biggest drivers of attendance - for example, they can help learners to see how school is important for their futures. We have a number of strategies in place around attendance but, without doubt, the most effective tool is parental support: when parents value education and academic success and talk about it positively at home, that has a noticeable impact on attendance. Think of it as an investment in your child's future and actively partner with us in ensuring they are at school every day.

This is our up to date data as of this morning showing attendance Year to Date and also today as an example. We are analysing the data of our individual pupil's attendance and staff are connecting with parents whose children are attending less than 80% of the time. We aim to work with all whānau to try to assist, where possible, to improve attendance rates.

All schools have to work with Ministry of Education codes for absenteeism. If your child is away, parents must contact the office to explain the reason, this is then recorded against the child's name. We will publish more details around attendance procedure in due course, You can also find our Policy and Procedures on our school website.

Year 5 & 6 Interschool - Waitara Central School

Last Friday Waitara Central came to visit our kura to have a sporting/cultural exchange. We were lucky enough to have some sunshine and no rain.

Thank you to Kaleb Jane and Matua Phillip for their korero and the kapa haka group for supporting the Yr 5 & children during the whakatau.

All the teams played hard and fairly. Thank you to the coaches who were able to support the tamariki.

I.P.S won the Chess, Football and Rugby. Waiatara Central won the netball.

It was a clash of the titans, the mighty kohanga moa kura versus the almighty Waitara Central kura.

We had so much fun. The score board was secondary to the valued friendships and comradeship of playing our peers from another school.

Our tamariki were commended on their REACH values which were noticed by our visitors. They were impressed and appreciated our fair play on the fields. The hospitality from all of our children while walking around our kura.

They also asked me to tell you how lucky we all are with our big spaces to play and flash classrooms. They were just a bit jealous of our glorious view of our Maunga! You all braved the chilly weather and played hard.

School Roll

Our current school roll is 373.

Welcome to Arlo Lund, Declan Gibson, Eli Gibson, Lucas Primmer-Beardsley, Yasmin Firdaus and Aiden Primmer-Beardsley who have joined us at IPS this term.

Pending Enrolments

If you or you know of anyone, wishing to enrol their child at Inglewood Primary School over 2023 2024 or beyond, please get them to email the Office with the child's name, date of birth, parent's name and contact number, so we can put them on our pre-enrolment list. This is for both IN ZONE and OUT of Zone Enrolments

Out of Zone Enrolments

Enrolment at Inglewood School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on the school website or from the school office.

The board is now inviting applications from parents who wish to enrol their children at Inglewood Primary School starting within Term 3 2023.

All applications must be received by 3pm Monday 26 June for Term 3 2023. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on Wednesday 28 June 2023. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

The board has determined that 20 places from Year 1-8 are likely to be available for out-of-zone students within Term 3 2023. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. Parents of students who live within the home zone and intend enrolling their child at any time during the year should notify the school to assist the school to plan appropriately.

The application form for enrolment is available from the school website, or from the school office.

Please note, that if the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Details relating to the next enrolment period Term 4 2023 will be published September 2023.

Ikura / Manaakitia te whare Tangata

We are delighted to share that Inglewood Primary School are participating in the Ikura | Manaakitia te whare tangata - period products in schools initiative.

Ikura (periods) are a fact of life for half the population. Through this initiative, the Ministry of Education is providing period products (pads and tampons) to support students in managing their ikura. We will have products available for students to use at school and to take home.

We hope that providing access to period products will help to reduce barriers to accessing education.

For more information on the initiative, please visit: Ministry of Education - Ikura initiative.

ParentLink News

Inglewood Primary School Parentlink would like to invite all parents to our Parentlink AGM on Wednesday 24th May at 7pm in the school Staffroom.

This year we have a number of our parents leaving Parentlink at the end of the year as their youngest child heads off to High School which means we have a number of positions available including - Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.

We meet about twice a term and have at least one fundraising event per term so there might be two to six hours of meetings and organising per term. If you are interested to help with this vital fundraising group for the school and to support our Tamariki then please come along to our meeting.

Any questions in the meantime please feel free to contact Kirsty on either parentlink@inglewood.school.nz or 021 404 430

We look forward to seeing you at our AGM.
