KRAFT MEADOWS NEWSLETTER
January 2022
Notes from the Principal
I hope this newsletter finds your new year off to a great start. I wish you and your family a great 2022 and I look forward to working with you and all of our Kraft Meadows Intermediate Families! This Friday (January 14) marks the end of our 1st semester. Your child will receive a final grade (percentage & letter) for their four core classes (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies). In addition, they will receive a CR/NC for their exploratory classes. Report cards will be available to view on the Powerschool parent portal on Monday, January 24. Just a reminder, grades can always be viewed in “real-time” throughout the school year by accessing the parent portal. Students that had Art/Spanish first semester, will now take STEM Lab during second semester, and vice-versa.
It is my honor to continue serving the students and families at KMIS! We have awesome kids here and I am so lucky to interact with them everyday! Thanks for your continued support and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Go Scots!

Dear Caledonia Community Schools community,
The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) revised the Public Health Order regarding K-12 school quarantine and isolation to reflect recent updates made by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While you are welcome to read the entire order above, our team has provided a summary of those changes and what they mean for our district:
Positive Case for students or staff:
All persons, regardless of vaccination status, who test positive for COVID-19 or have been diagnosed with COVID-19 by a licensed health care provider are required to isolate themselves at home. In K-12 educational settings that do not have a universal face mask policy, such as CCS, persons positive with COVID-19 must isolate themselves at home for 10 days, starting from the date when symptoms developed or the date of a positive test if asymptomatic. Isolation requirements for CCS students/staff with COVID-19 have not been changed under the new order.
Household Close Contacts:
Household close contacts are required to quarantine IF:
They are 18 and older and have not received all recommended vaccine doses, including boosters and additional shots for some immunocompromised people,
or
They are ages 5-17 and have not completed the primary series of COVID-19 vaccines,
or
They are persons of any age who have not had confirmed COVID-19 within the last 90 days (a positive viral test documented in MDSS at the time of the illness)
The quarantine period for household close contacts who are required to quarantine (see above) is a minimum of 10 days. This includes 5 days while the household positive case is in isolation and 5 additional days. Household close contacts may return to school on day 11 if wearing a mask at all times (days 11-15). Per the KCHD order, “Those unable or unwilling to wear a mask must continue to quarantine at home for days 11-15.”
Household Close Contacts:
Household close contacts are not required to quarantine IF:
They are 18 and older and have received all recommended vaccine doses, including boosters and additional shots for some immunocompromised people,
or
They are ages 5-17 and have completed the primary series of COVID-19 vaccines,
or
They are persons of any age who have had confirmed COVID-19 within the last 90 days (a positive viral test documented in MDSS at the time of the illness)
Household contacts not required to quarantine (see above) may attend educational settings
during the household case’s isolation period as long as they wear a mask throughout the duration of the household positive case’s isolation period plus an additional 10 days, regardless of the educational setting’s face mask policy, monitoring daily for symptoms. Per the KCHD order, “Those unable or unwilling to wear a mask should quarantine at home for the household positive case’s isolation period (5 days) and an additional 10 days.”
K-12 School Close Contacts:
The new public health order does not require educational institutions to report school close contacts to the Kent County Health Department any longer. However, we will continue to notify families of potential exposure in the classroom at the elementary level only given the recent availability of vaccines for students ages 5-11.
As a reminder, the federal mass transportation rule requiring individuals to wear a mask on a school bus remains in effect until March 18th, 2022. We will continue to communicate any changes as we learn about new requirements.
As stated in previous communications, we will continue to work with public health officials and make the necessary adjustments to our practices based on local health department orders (Allegan and Kent), as well as the Michigan Department of Health and Humans Services (MDHHS), and CDC guidance.
We appreciate your patience and support as we navigate these ongoing changes.
Dr. Dedrick Martin
Superintendent
Caledonia Community Schools
