A Message from Mr. Hoog
Dear BSE families,
We are off to a fantastic start to the new school year! Our staff has appreciated your attendance at our parent information nights and it’s been a pleasure to meet so many of you. Your continued support and involvement will be extremely important to your child and our staff, thank you!
As I have visited classrooms during this past week, I have noticed many great activities and conversations taking place. Along with teaching and learning the academic content, we are building meaningful relationships, which is the foundation for success in education.
You have amazing children and we appreciate all you do to support our BSE family and community! If I have not already met you, please stop and say hello the next time you are at BSE or we see each other around town.
Respectfully,
Mr. Hoog

LATE ARRIVAL OR EARLY RELEASE:
As stated in our Student Handbook, late arrivals or early releases are discouraged as they are not in the best educational interest of the students. However, some circumstances require that a student be late to school or dismissed before the end of the school day. Parents should notify the office when these circumstances arise.
SCHOOL LUNCH VISITORS:
As the students, teachers, and the rest of the building staff are settling into a new school year, we will begin having lunch visitors September 4.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matches to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.
Allergy Friendly School Environment
Here at Brooks School Elementary, we make the safety and well-being of every student our top priority. That’s why we’re going to continue our pilot to reduce students’ exposure to peanuts and tree nuts. We want all of our families to be aware, not just our allergy families.
During the 2018-19 school year, BSE is going to continue to be an allergy friendly building. In order to do this, we need your help. We ask that you consider alternatives to anything containing peanuts or other tree nuts, such as: almonds, pecans, walnuts, cashews, and pistachios. The cafeteria will continue serving meals that are peanut and tree nut free.
Please remember if your child has a severe food allergy, it is imperative that you notify the school nurse. Also, if they require an Epi-pen, emergency medication orders must be signed by the child’s physician each school year.
Becoming a peanut and nut-friendly building is a collaborative effort. Students will not be punished if they bring in food containing nuts, so we cannot guarantee that children with allergies will not have accidental exposure.
This is a learning process for all of us, but we trust that you understand how important is to respect and adhere to these guidelines.

Destination Imagination (3rd grade and older)
What is DI? Each year, more than 150,000 students across the U.S. and 200 students in HSE participate in the Destination Imagination Challenge Experience. The Destination Imagination Challenge Experience includes six competitive Team Challenges that are rooted in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) concepts. Each Challenge encourages students to explore their passions, discover their own talents and abilities, and learn new skills.
DI believes that when an educational experience is fun and hands-on, students are empowered to take their learning to the next level. That’s why Destination Imagination is committed to providing a supportive environment where student participants develop skills that will enrich their lives for years to come.
