From the Desk of Pastor Paul
Dear Friends,
Well, the summer days are winding down as teachers and students begin to return to classrooms, bands and athletic teams return to practice, and those last vacation outings are taken. I hope you have experienced a summer with times of relaxation, refreshment, and renewal along the way!
This Sunday will be our final Lakeside service of the summer as we will have one worship service on September 1, Labor Day Weekend, at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary. Then on September 8th we return to our fall schedule with a number of special things taking place. You can read about those details in the announcements below. Why not take a few moments to think about a friend or family you know that might not have a church home and invite them to join you in worship as we begin the fall!
Our Characters of the Old Testament series turns this week to David and the story of his early rocky relationship with King Saul. If you want to read the full background, you can read 1 Samuel 15 – 24 to get a full picture of this scenario. Our message text will be 1 Samuel 24:1-12 and our theme is “Loving Your Enemies” which could not be more timely for our current cultural climate. The idea of loving an enemy rather than seeking revenge or blowing them away with an assault rifle seems long forgotten. Our public and political discourse is filled with angry and uncivil tweets and remarks. We are not kind.
Yet, as people of faith, we are called to a different and difficult standard. We follow Jesus who did not open his mouth when he was accused and ridiculed and rejected. We are called to turn the other cheek, walk the extra mile, lend to anyone who asks to borrow. As Dale Bruner puts it, we are to “use insults as incentives to creative mission”. Easier said than done, to be sure!
So come Sunday either outdoors at 8:30 a.m. or in the sanctuary at 10 a.m. to be with God’s people, to bring your praises and prayers and possibilities before the Lord!
See you Sunday,
Pastor Paul
