A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Falcon Families,

I hope you are staying safe and healthy! Governor Kate Brown added Washington County to the list of counties placed in a “pause”. This means that we are being asked to limit social gatherings, events, and alter plans for holiday events. At schools, it means we have to further limit the number of people working from the building, avoid events as much as possible, and do everything we can to help keep our staff and community safe and healthy. For the next two weeks we will have a very limited staff on campus. There will be someone in the office every day between 8:00 am and 4:30 and others will be available remotely. Even though the office staff will be available remotely, it may make the response time slightly slower.

This past week, Superintendent Grotting released his recommendation for new middle school boundaries. This recommendation still needs to be approved by the school board and is scheduled to be voted on during the December 14 meeting. The recommendation includes significant changes to the FOMS boundaries and places Rachel Carson at Cedar Park Middle School. This information was shocking for many to learn, especially those not at the most recent boundary meeting. Change is very hard and produces many contradictory feelings including hope and disappointment, excitement and fear, and elatedness and a sense of loss. I also want to acknowledge that this is another change in the midst of much uncertainty and anxiety with the pandemic. I am grateful for the patience the entire community has shown through CDL and ask that we continue to partner through the rest of the school year and the unknowns in front of us. Please continue to look for updates on transition plans for students going to different buildings next year, support for incoming students and community members, but most importantly ways that we will continue to build community and be FOMS/RC Falcons this year. Thank you, in advance, for your continued support!

I am very excited for students to have the opportunity to continue to participate in cultural lessons in advisory. This week, we will continue to honor Indigenous people (look for info about our new partnership with the Five Oaks Museum, formerly Washington County Museum, in the coming week) and we will provide our students a chance to learn about Diwali, the Festival of Lights. We would love to hear about students' own celebrations of Diwali and even feature them in future editions of the Falcon News and newsletters. Please send us pictures or stories!

Familias Falcon,

Unlike last spring, student attendance will count during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Please read the following guidance on how attendance will be tracked:

  • Teachers will take student attendance daily. Attendance may be counted in a variety of ways to accommodate families who may need to access instruction during different times of the day.

    • Attending a live teacher-led session

    • Watching a teacher-recorded video

    • Interacting with a teacher via email

    • Posting completed coursework online

  • Parent/guardian notifications will be sent out at approximately 5 p.m. each day if students haven’t engaged in their school work and have been marked as absent.

  • Each morning, teachers will access an attendance report and will reconcile any absences from the previous day with any new evidence of engagement during the evening.

Please call the attendance line at 503-356-2601 if your student will be missing school due to illness or medical appointments.
