Tech Today: Math Grades 3-12

Reminder: KSDE Math Website has changed!

Just a reminder that on Sunday, December 15th the url address associated with the Kansas State Department of Education Math website will change from www.ksde.org/math to community.ksde.org/math. Note there will no longer be a www in the address.

Please change your bookmark to reflect this.

Assessment Update:

So far, there are still issues with students not showing up correctly for both the MS and HS, so currently there is no way to assign formatives to your students. BAIP should be operating fine though.

The Elementary school appears to be showing correctly with many glitches. I will warn you that the KITE teacher portal is not as user friendly as we had hoped. There needs to be many improvements made. Here is a link to a form that you can bookmark and fill out to offer feedback as you experience issues. I think it will be an effective way for us to keep track of issues the state needs to know about:

We will notify MS and HS teachers as soon as everything is in place for you to start assigning formatives. I am sure many of you are anxious to get started! We will probably need to organize a time to meet so that I can walk you through and demonstrate how to use the new site.

The links to KITE teacher portal and student portal are at the bottom of this page. You will want to bookmark these.

Hippocampus

HippoCampus‘ goal is to provide students and educators with access to high-quality, free multimedia content on various education subjects. This website has become very popular among high school and college students, because it explains the most complicated subjects in an understandable manner.

Ten Marks

Math website for K-12 that has both a free and paid version. Third grade is using the free side of this and report it is very helpful. It allows you to set up student accounts and assign common core aligned math assignments (which allow text to speech options). Check it out at https://www.tenmarks.com/login

Using Legos to teach math concepts

I have seen posts on Facebook and Pinterest recently about using Legos to teach fractions. Here is an article that uses them as 10 frames, Multiplication, and Fractions.

Check it out here:

Oh NO Fractions!

There are now two apps in this series.
The original Oh No Fractions LAB! app is free and has won numerous awards. Allows students to compare fractions and reduce fractions and includes a prove it section. It also has 10 free operations available to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.

The new Oh No Fractions app is .99 cents and has added more operations.
