Counselor News
Here at LES, we will focus on being the best that we can be by exploring Character Counts, Bullying, and Red Ribbon Week. This month, students will learn the difference between bullying/harassment and bully-like behavior. We will discuss how to get help and steps to take to stop bullying!
We will celebrate Character Counts Week from October 29- November 2. This is the time of year where we accentuate conversations about our six important pillars of character:
TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPONSIBILITY, RESPECT, FAIRNESS, CARING, CITIZENSHIP
To celebrate, we will wear the following colors to school:
Monday- RED for Caring
Tuesday- PURPLE for Citizenship
Wednesday- GREEN for Responsibility
Thursday- YELLOW for Respect
Friday- DRESS IN COSTUME OR BLUE/ORANGE for Fairness/Trustworthiness
Bullying and Harassment
Here is some great information put out by FCPS to help our students and families understand bullying and harassment:
Bullying is defined as intentional negative actions on the part of one or more students, repeatedly and over time, that interfere with a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the school’s education programs. Harassment is defined as intentional negative actions on the part of one or more students that causes discomfort with identity issues in regard to race, color, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or other identifying characteristics, and that interfere with a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the school’s education programs. Harassment can be a one time incident. The acts can be written, verbal or physical including published communication that causes physical harm, damages property, causes fear of harm to person or property or disrupts the orderly operation of the school. Bullying or harassment can interfere with learning, cause grades to suffer, lead to absenteeism, damage self-esteem, and cause social and emotional problems in life. Further information about FCPS bullying, harassment and discrimination policies and support services is available at your local school or from: Janet Shipman Coordinator of Counseling and Student Support, 191 South East Street Frederick, MD 21701, 301-644-5220.
Wednesday, October 24th is Unity Day! LES will participate in Unity Day by wearing orange. Unity Day is a special day where we can all wear orange to show that we are against bullying! Make it orange and make it end! Come together in one giant orange message of hope and support, wear orange and share orange to color our nation, and even the world, visibly showing that our society believes that no child should ever experience bullying.

Parent Teacher Conferences Nov 7-9
Online signup is available now! You can access the signup on our website.
After creating an account for yourself, you will click on the grade level your child is in. Look for your child’s teacher in the left column. After making sure you are signing up for the correct teacher, you will select a date and then a time slot. *Please note your information is accessible only by the administrator of the sign up, and you will only receive emails that are related to your signups.
On October 18, letters will go home with those students who still need a conference scheduled so that parents can indicate their preference for an afternoon or evening conference time.
We are so excited about this feature and truly hope that you will take advantage of this quick and easy method for signing up for your child’s conference!

Preview New School-Accountability Measures
Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) invites the public to learn about new Maryland school-accountability measures at any of four regional meetings. The one-hour meetings will give the community opportunities to find out about Maryland's new state-issued star ratings for schools, to preview the new format of state-issued school report cards and to learn about new school-accountability standards.
Meetings are from 7-8 p.m. as follows:
Monday, October 29 at Frederick High
Thursday, November 1 at Catoctin High
Monday, November 12 at Brunswick High
Monday, November 19 at Middletown High
"In Frederick County, we work to empower all our students to receive an outstanding education," says Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban. "While test scores are one important measure of Maryland's new accountability plan, there are others included, like access to a great curriculum, attendance, school climate, college and career readiness, and student growth over time."
Based on all these factors, the state will give each school a numerical score and a simple star rating, on a scale of one through five stars. These will appear on the new report card that the state issues for each school.
After the Maryland State Department of Education issues the new school report cards in December, FCPS will hold additional meetings in each high school feeder pattern to help parents understand the new factors that help measure school performance and to empower each school community to work together to equip students for success.
