Wednesday Note
August 10, 2022
A Note from our Principal
Greetings WPA Families,
What a busy week! We welcomed our teachers and staff back into the building. Put the finishing touches on some school wide improvements like fresh paint, new carpet, updated air conditioning units, recoating the roof, and a new dishwasher for the kitchen. (We are thrilled to be saying goodbye to Styrofoam trays this year and making our lunch program more environmentally friendly this year.)
Classrooms are really starting to come together with bulletin boards, textbooks, and name tags in place. We have welcomed new team members and are excited to be adding music to the rotations classes student enjoy every week. The only thing that is missing is our wonderful students. We look forward to seeing you at Meet-the-Teacher tomorrow night from 4:00-6:00. (Please note that because we are moving to a digital format for “Back-to-School Night” next week Meet-the-Teacher will be our primary in person event to start the school year. We can’t wait to see you all!
A few notes to help your family start the school year strong…
First Days of School
Monday, August 15th, is the first day of school this year for 1st – 6th grades. School doors will open at 7:45 and our breakfast program will be available from 7:45 – 7:55 am. Please consider transitioning your students to a consistent sleep schedule now to begin the school year rested and ready to go.
Kindergartener’s first day of school will be Monday, August 22rd. During the previous week (August 15th – 19th), kindergarteners will be completing their beginning of year testing during their reserved time. Meet the Teacher & Back to School "Night"
After a restful summer break we are looking forward to seeing our students and their families again this fall! We are hosting our annual "Meet the Teacher" event on Thursday, Aug 11th, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. This is an informal open house style event. Feel free to drop by, check out the updates to our hallways and classrooms, find your classroom, and of course meet your teachers!
We will be offering Back to School "Night" digitally this year to make it more accessible to families. Look for our Back to School Night e-mail with all the links and details the first week of school.
Carpool Drop-off and Pick-up Reminders.
We would like to improve carpool drop-off and pick-up time and have worked to set forth procedures in order to maximize flow while maintaining student safety.
Please note the following:
o Front Lot: pull forward to just beyond the kinder door. Back Lot: pull forward to the end of the sidewalk (with enough room to exit).
o Stay in your car and do not exit so we can keep the line moving.
o Once you have dropped off/picked up your child, exit the carpool lane to the left lane and proceed forward to exit to the street.
o If you have not picked up or dropped off your child, stay in the line and wait. Do not pull out to the left and then cut back in. Doing so disrupts the flow and slows it down.
o Please respect the Student Safety Patrol directions in the morning and staff in the afternoon—we want to get you out of line just as fast as you do, but we MUST maintain student safety.
o In the front parking lot, you may only exit LEFT so as to not turn into the student crosswalk. In the back parking lot, you may only exit RIGHT so as to not interfere with the turn in lane for the back parking lot.
o Handicap Parking in the front parking lot is ONLY for those with a posted handicap parking pass. Please do not park in any of the spots if you do not have a pass.
o The carpool lanes are the ONLY locations on school property for drop off or pick-up— the parking lot is not a drop off option. Having to stop the carpool lane for parents and their children to cross stops the flow and increases wait time. Exception: the parent needs to go into the front office.
o Do you need to go to the front office outside of drop-off and pick-up times (8:15 am –2:00 pm and after 3:00 pm)? You are welcome to utilize the carpool lane and park for up to 5 minutes. Anything longer that 5 minutes, please park in the parking lot and walk in.
School Lunch and Reading Support
Did you know that schools get additional support to help students struggling in reading through the Free and Reduced lunch program? It also helps students access both breakfast and lunch at school. Even if you child brings lunch from home please take a moment to apply for the program and maximize the support we can offer students.
You can apply here.
School Supplies
You can access the list of recommended school supplies and greatly appreciated donations on our website to jump on back-to-school year shopping early.
Class Assignments
We are going digital this year on class assignments! This allows parents to check out class assignments from home by logging onto Aspire. So fast and easy….and bonus…you can do it in your jammies.
***We have updated some of the class assignments this week. Please check Aspire for updates.
Communication
Perhaps you are admiring the look and accessibility of our newsletter? We are looking forward to using “Smore” as a tool to improve our communication with families this year. Including an option to text you the Wednesday Note instead of requiring you to login to your e-mail to stay up to date.
Restaurant Night
Our first restaurant night will be August 30th at Handel's Ice Cream in Woods Cross!
More information to come! Mark your calendars!!
