August 21, 2013
Welcome back. Today I officially feel like I am back to school. I am starting to pull things out of storage and think about the upcoming year.Make sure you stop up in the media center to see all of the new things we have happening this year. It will be a busy place-- watch for new iPads, Chromebooks and piles of new books!
Do something to make this a great year.

Online Newsletter
One of my roles as the media specialist is to encourage staff and students to work with new technology tools. Staff and students, think about making your own online newsletter using Smore. Come to the media center to ask for help with your creation!
Students-- This would be great for a project-- it is one way to design a website.
Staff-- This would be a great way to communicate with students and parents. Or, you could have your students make a Smore to demonstrate learning.
Below are a few of the features you can add to a Smore newsletter.

Variant by Wells: When 17-year-old Benson Fisher finally becomes fed up with foster homes, he applies for a scholarship to Maxfield Academy in New Mexico in the hope that he will be able to lead a new life. Upon arriving, however, Benson realizes the “school” is anything but; he and around 70 other “students” are divided into three factions and forced to find ways to survive in an environment where the rules change every day (Publisher's Weekly).

How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character by Tough: Why do some children succeed while others fail? The story we usually tell about childhood and success is one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter more have to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, optimism and self-control (Mariner Books).
