Weekly IB Update
News and Resources for IB at SMS 1/19 - 1/22
Dear SMS Community,
Our conversation made me think about how many different ways there are for students to demonstrate that they are wrestling with big ideas and that this process - learning - is an individual endeavor. It looks different kid to kid, topic to topic.
Here are some questions to prompt students to consider how they are learning, rather than what they are learning:
- What new understandings do I have?
- What connections have I made?
- What am I still wondering?
- What new skills have I mastered? What skills might I need to work on?
- What strategies have I used? What strategies have I learned that I can use in future?
- What patterns have I noticed? How might I apply what I learn from them?
- What might my next steps be?
- How might I approach things differently next time?
- What strengths have I noticed in myself and others?
- What challenges might I need to overcome?
- Who might be able to support me? How might I support others?
- What have I noticed about myself as a learner?
What other reflective questions would you add to support your students in seeing themselves as capable and knowledgeable?
Interestingly, these questions are helpful for adult learners, too. Between virtual teaching and IB, the learning curve at Sinagua is steep. Regardless of where you are, you are all capable and knowledgeable. I appreciate your willingness to take risks and try new things and for your grace as I take up all of your Wednesday afternoons. This Wednesday you will have time to work in your departments. As I ask myself the reflective questions above, I want to say that I recognize how I support others includes protecting collaborative time and seeking further space for collaboration.
I'm looking forward to continuing to learn from each of you,
Natalie
