Bulldog Bulletin
New Britton Elementary - October 9, 2015
Principal's Message
Dear Bulldog Families,
An important goal for all teachers is to build a strong sense of community in their classrooms. As a school, we also focus on how to be a contributing member of our school community. As a parent, I try look for ways in which I can involve my daughter in our larger Fishers community.
As the city of Fishers continues to grow and change, so do the opportunities for families. The Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW) is having an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 8 pm. Families will have the opportunity to learn more about the many services this department provides to Fishers residents. They will be raising their overhead doors, and inviting community members in to see the trucks, explore their department, and ask questions about what they do. I encourage you to take advantage of this community learning event.
As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

News from the Clinic
Mrs. Vogt is still entering student immunization records into Skyward. If your student's Skyward health records indicate "Not in Compliance" and you have provided her with immunization records, there is no need for concerns. She has already contacted parents whose student's immunizations are not up to date.
Head Lice Information
From time to time there may be cases of head lice (pediculosis) in the school. This is nothing to panic about. Head lice are a nuisance but not a health hazard. They do not spread disease.
What are head lice?
· Tiny wingless insects that are the size of a sesame seed (1/8 of an inch in size).
· Head lice have six legs for holding onto hair and moving quickly. They do not jump or fly.
What are nits?
· The eggs of head lice.
· Nits are shaped like a tear drop and are located close to the scalp, especially at the nape of the neck, crown of the head and behind the ears.
· They are firmly attached to the hair shaft.
How are head lice spread?
· Directly through head-to-head contact, or indirectly (less frequently) through sharing clothing, combs, hats, scarves, bed linens, towels and earphones, etc.
· Young children frequently get head lice because they have more head-to-head contact.
· Having head lice has nothing to do with being dirty or having bad hygiene. Head lice have been around for thousands of years and prefer living on clean hair.
How do I know if my child has head lice?
· If you see your child itching or scratching his head, or notice scratch marks or a rash on his neck, crown of head or behind the ears, inspect the head for head lice.
· Not everyone who has head lice will have symptoms of itching or scratching, which is why it’s very important to check your child’s head routinely.
· To inspect your child’s head:
o Ask him to sit in a place with bright light (sunshine is best).
o Look closely through their hair, especially behind their ears, at the nape of their neck and the top of their head.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising our children to be readers means getting involved while they’re young. That’s why I’m excited to announce that New Britton Elementary is having a Book Fair. Scholastic’s “Monster Book Fair” will begin on Wednesday, October 14th, and end the following Wednesday, October 21st. Accelerated Reader (AR)
The AR program is already going strong for this year! This reading program allows students to read AR books and then take comprehension quizzes at school to earn points. Students earn prizes 4 times per year based on their points. Please see the reward structure below. Parent teacher conferences
Parent teacher conferences are quickly approaching and to get the most out of the conference come prepared. Before your conference time ask your child how they feel about school and what they like or would change about school. As you nightly look at your child’s papers and their assignment notebook/sheet, pull out a few papers that you might ask about with the teacher. Also bring a list of specific questions you would like to ask the teacher. More then likely the teacher will answer many of these questions, but it is always good to have something in front of you to look at and remember. Here are some questions that might be asked or covered in the conference:
· Is my child performing at grade level in reading and math?
· Does my child turn in homework regularly?
· What are my child’s strengths and challenges?
· Does my child get along with others?
· What can I do at home to support my child and the learning that is going on in your classroom?
Hope you have a good parent teacher conference. Enjoy Fall Break!
Chaucie's Place
NEW BRITTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is partnering again this year with Chaucie’s Place, a child advocacy organization in Hamilton County, to bring Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children to our Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students. Smart Steps is a child sexual abuse prevention and education program that empowers your child to say “NO!” to any unwanted touches that make them uncomfortable from anyone.
The Smart Steps education program will be taught at NBE on October 20.
We invite you to attend a Chaucie’s Place Parent Night to learn more about the Smart Steps program. Fall Creek Elementary will be hosting on Tuesday, September 15th from 6:00pm-7:00pm and Sand Creek Elementary will be hosting from 6:00-7:00pm on Wednesday, September 23rd. These meetings are open to all parents and/or guardians of Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students. Please be advised that Parent Night is not open to children.
