Staffing Updates
Starting Monday, October 29th you will see a new face at Keith. Allison Blaise will be joining the Keith teaching ranks as a part-time resource room teacher shared between Keith and Meadowbrook Elementary Schools. Next week Allison will be at Keith in the afternoons and her classroom space will be shared with Amy Bland. Please be sure to welcome Allison to our Dragon Team!
Due to our count being below 600, the playground para position open after Tina's departure will not be filled. This means that all grade level teachers will need to work to divide your students for indoor recess days. In addition, Julie Palermo will also be exiting the Interventionist position and we will no longer have a person filling that role. Julie will remain at Keith as a building substitute. Julie will continue to work in the interventionist position for the next two weeks as we work to transition. Our team efforts will certainly be needed as Julie's role at Keith changes.

iReady Notes from Mark Hess:
Notes and reminders about iReady:
· Utilize the resources in iReady Central. From iReady Central;
“Organized, engaged, and reflective leaders are a crucial part of a successful i-Ready implementation. By outlining plans, goals, and actions for the year, you become prepared to energize students and staff around getting good data and achieving strong growth. Using the resources below will enhance support of your i-Ready implementation by allowing you to plan key actions, self-assess, and refer to “lessons learned” from other experienced i-Ready educators.” (full details @ http://i-readycentral.com/articles/leading-your-implementation/)
· iReady Central provides directions, talking points, video tutorials for teachers and students, pre-diagnostic prep material, and much more.
· The diagnostic IS NOT a testing event, rather an integral part of the instructional process.
· Results from the diagnostic will provide the customize reports necessary to provide the best support and instructional pathways for all learners – those who struggle and those who need enrichment.
o Teachers should use the reports to help inform their instruction. iReady Central provides specific directions on how to use each report and outlines reports to be used by the teacher, grade-level team, and principal.
· Take a look at the iReady FAQ page – awesome questions and answers http://i-readycentral.com/faq/
· iReady levels can be changed specific to the student. This is particularly helpful for students with disabilities who may need to be assessed at standards below current grade level.
· After the Diagnostic please take a look at the tools and resources that teachers and principals should be using to help guide the conversations around the results. These step-by-step directions, templates, and focus questions provide a guide that can be used to help close those achievement gaps and bring clarity and focus to what needs to happen after the diagnostic. Go to iReady Central and look at the navigation pane on the left. Select Using Your Data → Use Diagnostic Data. You will see some excellent tools that should be used (see image below).
· Remember - we have Reading and Math Instruction licensing for all students, K-8. The data shows that students using Instruction for a minimum of 50 minutes per week have the most gains on window 2 and 3 diagnostic than kids that don’t. The data also tells us the correlation between iReady and M-STEP is about 85%. Good tier 1 instruction, combined with iReady Instruction is a nice recipe for student success!
· Principals and AP’s – the most important thing you can do is carve out 30 minutes and explore iReady Central. I am confident you will find exceptional resources, tips, and direction on how iReady diagnostic and instruction can be used to help increase student achievement and close the gaps.
· What do we do with the Parent Reports? Share the reports with parents. Use the Engage Students and Families section in iReady Central.

Diversity Week Assembly - A note from our PTA
Hello Keith Staff -
The PTA is excited to announce a special event coming to all Keith students and staff members this November to help celebrate Diversity week, November 12-16! Professional Japanese Taiko drumming ensemble, Raion Taiko from the Great Lakes Taiko Center, will kick off our Diversity Week with a bang!
The assemblies will take place, Monday, November 12th at the following times:
Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2: 9:15 am - 10:00 am
Grades 3-5: 10:15 am - 11:00 am
Our students will experience the excitement and artistry of traditional and contemporary Japanese Taiko music. Taiko is an ancient Japanese method of drumming where the instruments range in size from roughly a snare drum ("shime"), to drums as large as a car (the "o-daiko")! In addition to an exciting performance, students will have the opportunity to learn about the different type of drums; how they are made and their different uses, all while soaking in the essence of Japanese culture and history. The Great Lakes Taiko center is located in Novi, MI and is owned an operated by WLCSD alum, Brian Sole! He is very excited to be sharing his talents in his home town with the Keith community.
For more information regarding Taiko drumming, or the Great Lakes Taiko Center please visit: http://www.michigantaiko.net If you have any questions, please see Marci, or contact Amy King at amyking06@gmail.com. We hope you and your students will enjoy these exciting performances!
Thank you-
Amy King

On behalf of the Scholastic Book Fair Committee, I would like to inform you of a unique book fair event. Mr. Schu, the Scholastic Ambassador to School Libraries will be visiting Keith on Wednesday, November 7th. He travels to schools all over and presents to 3rd and 4th graders. Due to our consistently successful book fairs, Keith has earned a great reputation in Michigan. As a result, the regional Scholastic Book Fair representatives chose Keith as a stop on Mr. Schu's tour and we are so excited to host him!
Morning class and FAPES may be affected as the assemblies will be in the gym as follows:
3rd Grade - 9:15-9:45

Professional Learning Corner - October
Connected Learning Days - Please let me know if you would like me to submit your name!
This opportunity came to me from Oakland Schools. Please let me know if you would like me to recommend you for this learning opportunity!
In the current days of alphabet soup initiatives ( UDL, PBL, STEM, COT, NPDL, RULER, PBIS, SAT, MSTEP, and more), many of us find ourselves struggling to “fit it all in” and instead, seeking to understand the connections among these frames and projects. Building on the six principles of Connected Learning, we invite you and others you will recommend to engage with a network of educators through shared purpose and pursuit of academic inquiry.
Please help us identify educators in Oakland County to participate in Connected Learning Days. Launching in early December, 2018, this is a series of Saturdays and online experiences that flexibly allow for participation at various levels of time commitment. Our time together will be collaboratively and responsively designed with and for the members of the network. There is no cost to get started. We will build it as we go.
The goals of these experiences are to primarily:
· build a diverse community of practitioners around progressive education in order to inspire and energize ourselves as educators;
· inquire around our teaching and learning practices;
· create spaces in which to play and explore new ideas;
· and make connections between and among our various initiatives and educational networks.
We are beginning this network in order to create real and sustained change in our classrooms and our systems to better support deeper learning outcomes.
We are looking for practitioners in school settings (principal/teacher/support services) who are share beliefs around student-centered learning environments and have a commitment toward continuous improvement. We are hoping to invite educators who may be known as early adopters, budding leaders, and innovators. Additionally, because we hope this community will inspire and rejuvenate its members, we are hoping to invite educators who are on the cusp of burnout or who are thinking of leaving the profession.
We encourage you to send us a name or two (perhaps, your own!) of educators you think would be interested in joining this new learning. We will follow up with an detailed invitation on how to get started. Please send us names and contact information by Wednesday, October 31, 2018---a direct email to lauren.childs@oakland.k12.mi.us or andrea.zellner@oakalnd.k12.mi.us
Thank you for helping us launch this new professional learning design and opportunity!
Warmest regards,
Andrea Zellner, Ph.D.

Making Thinking Visible
Purpose: What kind of thinking does this routine encourage?
This routine is about distinguishing facts from thoughts and judgments. It helps organize ideas and feelings in order to consider a situation where fairness may be at stake. It promotes the fine discernment of information and perspective taking in order to clarify and make a tentative judgment.
Application: When and Where can it be used?
Students can use the reporter’s notebook in any number of situations: when discussing imagined or real moral dilemmas, topics from history, literature, or science; after reading a chapter, watching a video or performance; or when thinking about actual events from their own life, etc. This routine is most useful “mid-investigation”, after some information about a given situation has already been put on the table. Maybe things are getting convoluted, there are disagreements, or perhaps when opinions are taken as facts, or when things are getting “messy”. Use the routine to go deeper into an issue to clarify thoughts about it OR to even clarify what the issue is.
