From the Middle EMS and ELA
News from the Principal, October 7, 2019
Hello Parents and Families,
Thank you for all your involvement in your child's education. We had an excellent turnout at our EMS/ELA parent teacher conferences--nearly 58% of our families attended on Wednesday and Thursday night.
Just a reminder, we do not have school this Friday due to conferences comp day.
This week we will spend some time getting geared up for Quarter Two. Grades for quarter one will be finalized this Thursday. Most students are enrolled in semester or year long classes for all their classes. Some students will have a few schedule changes taking effect in quarter two. Parents and students will be made aware of these changes prior to October 10th. We will also have students pick new seats in the lunchroom. Lastly, we will spend some time revisiting a few policies and procedures to continue to build a successful environment for all students.
One topic in particular that I will be sharing with students is a request that students avoid using sprays such as perfumes, deodorants, and colognes in the classroom. Lately, we have noticed more students using these items in the classroom or even spraying them throughout the hallways. Not only do we ask that students be considerate of our students and staff who are medically-sensitive to these items, we also see this as a distraction in the learning environment.
Thank you for your support...as always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
~Annessa Hart, Principal

Understanding Your Gifted Child--An Upcoming Event!
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our first family event in September. For those of you who could not make it, or would like a review, here is a link to a recording of Susan Chandler's presentation on stress defense: Stress Defense with Susan Chandler
Next up: Dr. Jim Lelisle is coming to visit! Jim taught gifted and talented children and those who work on their behalf for more than 40 years. Jim is the author of more than 250 articles and 21 books and his work has been translated into multiple languages.
On October 23, Jim will be coming to Englewood to meet with our secondary students during the day. On the evening of October 23, we are invited to join with other metro area families for a meal and Jim's presentation: Understanding Your Gifted Child from the Inside Out.
RSVPs are required for this event. Please use this link to RSVP:

AVID Opportunity for 7th Graders
Our 7th graders have an exciting opportunity to join an important college readiness program at Englewood High School!
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a program that prepares students who are academically and personally motivated for admission to a two-year or four-year college, university, or career technical school. The core component of the AVID Program is the AVID elective, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes. Students are taught study skills, note taking, time management, writing and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture. The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students, adult tutors, and/or peer tutors and they provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum. Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities and college admission requirement information.
Students learned more about AVID during CCR last week. EMS has limited spots available for students in the 7th grade AVID Elective classes. We will be holding interviews and accepting applications from current 7th graders in the upcoming weeks, and students would begin the AVID elective (in place of their CCR class) during second quarter. We hope you encourage your students to take advantage of this opportunity!
