World AIDS Day
December 1 is World AIDS Day. It is easy to forget the misery of this disease when we don’t routinely hear about it like we once did. Now is a good time to review.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus spread through body fluids. It affects T cells so that they no longer fight off infections. The HIV infection leads to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). HIV remains a significant threat to all humans around the world.
According to www.cdc.gov, an estimated 1.2 million people around the world died from HIV related illness in 2014. Sub-Saharan Africa has the biggest concentration of infected and dying individuals leaving large numbers of orphans and devastating poverty. Around 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV and 1 in 8 of them are unaware they are infected. You might have noticed that recently there has been an increased number of cases of HIV and Hepatitis C at various locations in Indiana. This constitutes a public health emergency right here in our own state. Significant steps are now being taken to try to slow down the spread of viruses that are passed through body fluids.
One way these infections are passed is through drug abuse. Individuals with drug addictions will do anything to satisfy their need for the drug. They can even be found taking used needles and syringes from family members with diabetes and sharing and reusing them. Keep your eyes open for such behavior and any other risks that your relatives might be taking that might expose them to blood born pathogens.
We each should get updated on HIV facts by checking out www.cdc.gov and other reliable web sites. Be aware of your own HIV status by being tested. Realize that our children may be at risk as well. There is still no vaccine for prevention and still no cure. The good news is that there are now numerous medication regimens available for treatment. Antiretroviral medications markedly delay the onset of symptoms, particularly if started soon after infection. This infection cannot be beaten by ignoring it. As hard as it may be, we must conquer denial.
