October, 2017- News and Notes to Keep You Connected
A Note From the Principal
It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the first quarter! The end of the first nine weeks will be this Friday, October 6th. This week is extremely important for our students as they work to show the progress they've made over these first weeks of school.
While the end of the quarter marks the first big milestone in the school year, it also provides a great opportunity to make any adjustments needed to the trajectory of achievement students are showing. This progress will be discussed with you at your child's parent-teacher conference on October 26th. You should have already received an email with a link to sign up for conferences. Please be sure to do that soon, if you haven't already, and mark that date on your calendar with a big circle around it! Be thinking about what questions you have about your child's progress so that you can make the most of this time with the teacher.
We look forward to seeing you for conferences and for all of the fun, upcoming events happening this fall!
Kind regards,
Mrs. Donovan
New Math Series
If you have questions about the new math series or would like some assistance on knowing how to help your child at home when what they're doing may be different than the way that we learned math as children, we have some help for you! On parent conference day, a representative from enVision math will be here to assist parents in our computer lab with some of the online features that will be helpful to you. You're welcome to stop in the lab anytime during that day from 1:00 - 8:00 p.m.
In addition to this onsite training, there is a helpful resource on our school website. See the red button below to link to the page. In addition, on pages 5-7 of the parent guide, you'll see information about using the awesome app, Pearson Bounce Pages. Once you have downloaded this app, simply by scanning the student's homework page, you will be able to play a video that will help with that day's homework assignment! (Technology is crazy, isn't it?!)

Students Earn an All-School Reward!
- Put Safety First
- Respect Everyone
- Insist on Your Personal Best
- Demonstrate Responsibility
- Empathize with Others
When our students work together and our all-school credit collector is filled to the top, they earn a special reward for the whole school to enjoy. These rewards vary, but they often include something in the realm of the arts.
Our collector was filled in mid-September! Last week, our students were able to enjoy a wonderful performance by the JLine Dance Crew as their special reward. In addition to the hand-clapping, foot-stompin' music and dancing the students were able to see from a professional dance troupe from NYC, the performers brought personal messages which aligned to our PRIDE expectations. Students were reminded to be "upstanders" if they witness someone being unkind, to find the special talent within themselves, and to never give up, even when faced with tremendous challenges.
Congratulations to all of our students on reaching this goal! We've already started filling it up for the next round!
PTO Info
Trash Bag Sales
Thank you to everyone who placed orders for trash bags this year! Orders will need to be picked up on conference day, 10/26. We greatly appreciate your support of this, our largest fundraiser!!
Fall Book Fair
The fall book fair will be Monday, 10/23 through Friday, 10/27. If you are interested in helping out this week, please email the PTO account - clarkscreekpto@yahoo.com. Students will shop during the school day Monday - Wednesday and Friday, and the book fair will be open during conferences on 10/26 for parents to shop. We need volunteers to help students shop and to run the cash registers during these times.
Fall's Big Event!
The Nightmare on Elm Drive Halloween Extravaganza is just around the corner. It will be held on Saturday, 10/28 from 5-8pm. This year's event will feature the "Nightmare at the Museum" haunted house, along with our usual games and activities around the building, trick or treating in the hallways upstairs with the teachers, a costume contest in the gym, and dinner in the cafeteria. We will also be sending a Volunteer Spot link asking for volunteers to help in the cafeteria. Mark your calendars - YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE!!! Volunteers who work in the cafeteria for one hour will receive one free wristband!
We also need candy donations for the trick-or-treating part of the evening. Candy can be dropped off to the main office, or students may bring bags to place in the donation boxes that will be in Town Hall.
For those who are new to our school, the evening includes a "haunted house" with "friendly" and "scary" hours. If you don't feel that your child would enjoy the haunted house, there are many FREE games students can participate in during the evening, as well. Students are welcome to wear their own (school appropriate) costumes to the event. All students may participate in the trick-or-treating event through Town Hall, with school staff members handing out the candy!
Fall Parties
Class parties are on Friday, Oct. 13th, the day before fall break. As a reminder, if you are wishing to volunteer to help in your child's classroom during the party, you must have an approved background check on file. If you are planning to come, please also communicate this with the class rep so he/she knows how to plan. Parties will be from 2:45 - 3:30, except for first grade. (First grade parents, watch your teacher newsletters for specifics on your times.)
Next Meeting
Our next PTO meeting will be on October 9th at 6:30pm in the Clarks Creek library. Please enter through door 2 and turn right to the end of the hall.
Reminder - Volunteer at Clarks Creek!
Another thing we ask all volunteers to complete annually is the Volunteer Confidentiality Form. This form is available in the school office and should also be completed before the first volunteer experience.
We appreciate the help of all of our volunteers! We couldn't do it without you!
