Canby School District News
October 31, 2018
Dear Canby Families:
Thank you to everyone who participated in our fall conferences earlier this month. Conferences are a great opportunity to get a glimpse into your student's classroom and to better understand the learning taking place inside it. If you were unable to attend a conference this month, please consider reaching out to your student's teachers to set up some time to meet. Our educators value this time with you. Meeting one-on-one allows you to partner with teachers in your student's education.
I have been enjoying my visits into our classrooms. Our students are confident in their learning environments and eager to learn and collaborate. The artwork on the walls reflects true learning and engagement. I appreciate how positive our classrooms are and all that our educators do to connect with our students. Each teacher is working to help our students reach their full potential. It is evident to me as I visit our classrooms each week.
The state has released its school report cards. These report cards look different in years past, but still feature student achievement data. You should have received your student's Smarter Balanced Assessment results this month for the tests students took last spring. You can read more about our district's results here. In this month's newsletter, we're focusing on our goal of ensuring educator effectiveness. You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at how our educators are spending their professional development days with our ultimate goal being improving student achievement. Also in this newsletter, a very important health warning about the dangers of vaping.
I hope you enjoy the cooler fall weather as we approach the holiday season. We are thankful for your support of the students and staff in our district.
Best,

Other professional development in the district included analyzing student achievement data, focusing on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, and learning new strategies for making math more engaging.
Our counseling staff also took the opportunity to spend the day learning. They went to the Oregon School Counseling Association Conference and met Trudy Ludwig, a nationally-acclaimed speaker and an award-winning author who specializes in writing children's books that help kids connect and engage with their peers in kind and caring ways. Ludwig presented on the topic,“Creating a Safer Social-Emotional Learning Environment at School.” The counselors all purchased books for their counseling libraries on the topics of bullying, social ostracism, teasing, bragging, and restoring relationships. The counseling team found the experience very rewarding and invites you to visit Trudy Ludwig's website, which is full of resources for parents. Just click the button below.

Health Warning
The American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium calls vaping a public health disaster.
Vaping is a form of nicotine (or marijuana) consumption through a vaporizer, some as small as a USB drive. Vaping is dangerous and can have long-term health impacts. However, research shows that young people who are vaping are not aware of what they're putting into their bodies.
Juul devices are small and look similar to a USB drive. These vaporizers allow people to inhale dangerous chemicals with little detection.
Earthquake Safety Drill
Students and staff practiced the "drop, cover, hold" safety tactics and then evacuated the buildings when the "all-clear" was given. Canby Fire District worked with our staff to ensure the drills ran smoothly and that the district is proactive in its earthquake preparedness.

CHS Fall Play - Curtains
It's set in 1959 Boston and follows the fallout when Jessica Cranshaw, the supremely untalented star of Robbin' Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. It is up to Lt. Frank Cioffi, a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself. Cioffi also dreams of being in musical theater. [Description via Wikipedia]
Showtimes are November 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10 at 7:00 pm at the Fine Arts Center. You can purchase tickets at the box office.
