Are you still focused on pedagogy?
Lately there has been a refocus in education on pedagogy(the science of how best to teach). In the age of Pinterest and so many other forums to find activities, sometimes we forget that the activity is not what is selected first. We must first make sure we understand what students are to learn and determine the best approach to teach them the concepts or skills. In between sleeping, eating and sleeping again over Thanksgiving break, I spent a lot of time thinking about the idea of teaching practice on our campus and in education in general. We have so much to do, so much to teach and at times we can loose focus on the fact that there is an art and science to teaching. As we go into the last weeks of this semester, I want to challenge you to focus diligently on the art and science of teaching, the how best to teach a particular skill or concept.
You might love particular activities or resources, but they may not be right for the students you currently teaching or the best approach to teach the concepts or skills you are focusing on. In the link below takes you to a great QUICK read on evidence based teaching. These practices are definitely things I see in our building but it's important for each of you to examine your practice to see how effectively you are using the teaching strategies below. Ultimately, if your students are not learning at the levels they should, or the levels you would like them to, you MUST examine your practice. Happy Teaching!
QSSSA-Student Engagement Strategy
QSSSA is an engagement strategy that ensures total participation and the use of academic language in all classrooms. It is a strategy designed to get students to use new academic language during student-student interactions. QSSSA is a great strategy to encourage our students to speak, listen, read and write.
Below is a link to a few resources that will teach you more about the strategy.
