Motion of the Ocean

what is respomsible for the oceans curents

Currents ! What causes them?

The main things that are responsible for setting ocean currents in motion are wind and variations in water density. AWind transfer monmentumto the water it blows acroiss by creating fricition on the waters surface. Wind driven currents

Gyres ! What are they and where do they occur?

A gyre in oceanography is any large system of rotating ocean currents, particularly those involved with large wind movements. Gyres are caused by the Coriolis effect; planetary vorticity along with horizontal and vertical friction, which determine the circulation patterns from the wind curl (torque).

The differnce between Western / Eastern Ocean Boundary Currents

Eastern boundary currents, which flow from high latitudes to the equator, are slower, shallower, and wider than western boundary currents.

El Nino ( ENSO)

The El Nino is a buildup of warm water in the Central and Eastern Equatorial Pacific. When this occurs, this event tremendously affects world weather patterns. The trade winds blow strongly westward along the equator. Other winds blowing toward the equator parallel to the coast of South America create an upwelling and make the surface water cool.
