Principal's Pulse

What a beautiful week both inside and outside of VAES! Our students have been involved in many exciting learning opportunities throughout the campus. I have had the joy of watching smiling faces while students are having fun in class, celebrating successes and hard work and listening to sweet voices reading. They are making such great progress in their academic skills!

Please look further down in the newsletter for more details on the Basketball Clinic on April 18th at the High School all to raise funds for the Reagan and Grant Scholarship Fund. Please R.S.V.P. using the form below or the one that came home in Thursday folders this week for planning purposes. Thank you for your consideration in making a donation in honor of the children even if you cannot attend the event.

Thank you for sharing your children with us. We love being a part of their lives, and we thank you for helping us in their education. Please continue to read each night, use new vocabulary, practice math facts and discuss their learning around the dinner table or in the car on the way to the ballpark. Your assistance makes all the difference in your child's success.

Save the Date! Spread the word...

We will be hosting our PreK and Kindergarten Round Up for the 2016-2017 school year on Thursday, April 21st. Please help us spread the word to everyone in the community who has children this age. We want to enroll as many of these students as possible in April to help us with planning over the summer. Thank you for helping us spread the word!

Necessary Documentation for School Enrollment

If you need a copy of your child's birth certificate, you can go directly to and order a certified birth certificate for $22, the same price as a walk-in or mail order. This online service, offered in English and Spanish, provides parents with a straightforward, secure option for ordering their child’s birth certificate. The orders are fulfilled by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Immunization Information from the School Nurse

Students must have all immunizations current in order to be placed on a class list for the 2016-2017 school year. Please see the information below to determine which immunization(s) your child may need. For our campus, this mostly affects incoming Pre-K and Kinder students.

Memorial Scholarship

An endowed scholarship is being set up through the Van Alstyne Education Foundation to honor Reagan and Grant Small. All donations are tax free and will help us to continue to honor the memory of these two precious children for years to come. Checks can be made payable to the VAEF with Reagan and Grant's name in the memo line. You may send your monetary donation to:

Van Alstyne Education Foundation
P.O. Box 1620
Van Alstyne, TX 75495

With an endowed scholarship once the requirements are met, the foundation will be able to give a scholarship each year without having to continuously raise the money yearly. Karen and her family will be able to present this scholarship and continue to keep the memory of her children alive for years to come. If you could help with any amount at all, it will be GREATLY appreciated.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sarah Coleman at 903-816-4321 or

Music Club

Mrs. Beard is hosting an after school Music Club for some of our 4th graders. The students are working on putting a piece together. They are also figuring out the melody on the instruments. Our young musicians will share what they have learned on May 3rd from 3:30 - 4:00.

1st Grade Measuring

These first graders have a ball with Ready, Set, Teach High School Student, Emily Gartman. They are measuring the "paper version" of Emily with nonstandard units in math.

4th Grade Science Lab

Our students completed a science lab to answer this question - How do shadows made by the sun change during the day?

Genius Hour Project

These two 2nd graders chose to help others for their Genius Hour project. They are collecting school supply items to support our students in need at the beginning of next school year. They will have a collection box for the items outside the library for the next two weeks. Thank you for your consideration in donating a box of crayons, package of notebook paper, pencils, etc. that they can compile for the fall. I love the hearts of our students!

Looking for ways to serve our students...

Your VAES PTA is looking to fill officer, committee, and volunteer positions for the 2016-2017 school year. The PTA is a vital organization for our school and our children, and it cannot be a success without volunteers like you. There are many opportunities ranging from positions that require very little time each year to more involved board positions that require time each week. If you are looking for a way to connect with your child’s school, PTA is a great avenue. For more information, please email Jenna Hughes at
