Hoover Elementary School News
February 2023
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are halfway through the school year!
Last week, students and staff participated in the Hoover Mini-mini THON. Students from Camp Hill High School came to Hoover to help facilitate this event. Students participated in a variety of activities which included: Bingo, a Freeze Dance/Dance Party, a game of 3-Pin, a Craft, and a snack. Throughout the week students brought in coins for the coins war. Today we held our "Reveal Assembly" so ask your student how much was donated/collected at Hoover and which class won the Coin Wars.
Thank you for joining us last week at the First and Second Grade Concert. It was great to have this event back in person this year. The students did a wonderful job performing!
Recess during Winter months
We make every effort to get students outside, even on cold days. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. If the temperature falls below 25 degrees or there is inclement weather, we will then have indoor recess.
Flexible Instructional Days
In the event that we need it, here's the information regarding Flexible Instructional Days in the event we have to close for inclement weather. Since we have already used our first "official" snow day, the remaining weather closings will be considered FID days.

Electronic Communication Devices
We are seeing an increase in the use of personal electronic communication devices, particularly watches, where students are able to send/receive text messages. While I understand the safety reasons for having such devices, these must be turned off during the school day. Please refer to the School Board Policy linked below for further information and details. If you need to get in touch with your child during the school day, you should contact the main office for assistance. If your child needs to get in touch with you, they may use a school phone, at the teacher's discretion, to contact you. If your child is ill, or we need to get in touch with you for any reason, we will also use a school phone to do so. Thank you for helping to support this policy.

March is going to be a busy month, so stay tuned for some exciting happenings in our school next month too!
Thank you,
Mrs. Czarnecki

"SOUP"er Bowl Collection February 6-10
During the week of February 6-10, Hoover and Eisenhower Elementary will host another canned food drive to benefit the Earl Besch Pantry.
During the week, students can bring in donations (see list below) to “vote” for the Super Bowl winner---either the EAGLES or the CHIEFS. We will track the total donations by grade, and the grade who brings in the most will earn extra recess.
The following is a list of items requested by the Earl Besch Pantry:
-toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.)
-canned fruit
-canned meats (tuna, chicken, salmon, etc.)
-pasta and pasta sauce (various kinds)
-rice
-cereal
-dish soap
-laundry detergent
-toilet paper and paper towels
There will be a display by the cafeteria (at Eisenhower) and by the first-grade dismissal hallway (at Hoover) for students to drop off their donations. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.
In addition to the week-long collection drive, we will also have a school-wide spirit week!
Monday = Hat Day
Tuesday = Twin Day (dress the same as a friend or two)
Wednesday = Referee Day (wear black and white; wear stripes)
Thursday = Camp Hill Sports Day (wear blue and white)
Friday = Favorite Sports Team
Second graders using the 4'Cs to "Break out"
The second-grade students have doing Breakout Box activities in their classrooms. In a Breakout Box activity, students work together and think critically to "break into" locked boxes. They must solve puzzles/clues and follow directions carefully to succeed. Breakout box games require "the four C's"
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Creativity
- Critical Thinking
Looks like these students were successful in solving the clues to unlock the box and "find the mitten".
Counselor's Corner
What’s Happening in Guidance: Our February Guidance lessons will start off with a focus on safety. Students will learn strategies to keep themselves safe in various situations and identify trusted adults they can go to if they are feeling uncomfortable. Later in the month, students will learn about goal setting. We will set a goal, create a plan, and discuss who can help support us in achieving this goal!
Interesting Article of the Month: Have the cold Winter months led to an increase in your child’s screen time? Check out the article below for some tips on creating limits around screen time for your little ones.

Coming in March!
On March 10, Hoover Elementary is pleased to announce we will be visited by author Frank Murphy. Over the last week in media (library) class, students read a Frank Murphy book and Mrs. Strout sent home a book order form with your child. This is optional. If you would like to order a book, please return the form and the money by February 14. If you would like to preview the books, here is a link to Newtown Bookstore:

Van Go! Museum on Wheels
The Elementary Art Department is pleased to announce that the VanGo! Museum on Wheels will be coming to both Eisenhower and Hoover! Thanks to a generous Lion Foundation grant, students will be able to participate in this authentic art museum experience at the beginning of March. The current VanGo! Museum on Wheels is a 31-foot RV home equipped with an onboard museum gallery. Visits include tours onboard the bus, group assemblies, and a hands on-activity. This is an amazing opportunity for students to explore local, contemporary artists while reinforcing existing curriculum and standards. The VanGo! will be coming to Hoover on March 15 & March 16.
