South St. Paul Middle School Update for Families

Dear Middle School Families,

I'm writing to you as I observe a sixth grade Language and Literature class. I'm lucky that I've been able to be in a lot of classrooms lately. Many of the students see me at breakfast and lunch, they come up to me and say, "You were in my class!" Students are proud to show me their classrooms and their work, and it warms my heart to see them learning in person. I can tell you that (generally) students are beginning to fall into academic routines. We are still working to help students consistently demonstrate expected behavior especially around how to treat each other.

Play Fighting

Please talk with your student about play fighting at school. Students seem to horseplay with their friends often. Administration has been and will continue to call home when we see play fighting. However, if you could have a preventative conversation with your student, I would really appreciate it. There are many students and staff that see students play fighting, but don't know that they kids are friends or engaging in horseplay. It feels chaotic and dangerous to bystanders.

WIN Wednesday
As I write this, we are 3/4 the way through our first late start Wednesday. Please send any reflections to your child's connections teacher, or to me directly. We want to reflect and refine our practices.

Homecoming Football Game

If middle school students want to attend the football game on Friday, October 8, they MUST be escorted by an adult who will stay at the game the entire time the student is there. Many students have told me they will be at the football game. It did not yet sound like all had checked with their families about this. Adults must be with middle school students at the game. We would love to have you! Please buy tickets in advance at this link.

Sincerely,

Leah Bourg

Asynchronous Wednesday Mornings- What I Need Wednesday

FAQs

Q: Why are we doing asynchronous Wednesday mornings?

A: We want to make sure every student gets what they need. Asynchronous Wednesday mornings (starting in October) will allow students to work after school on Tuesday or before school on Wednesday on work that is cultivated just for them. Teachers will use Wednesday mornings to collaborate and create interventions that fit every student. We believe this change will result in more students excelling in academics and social/ emotional learning.

Q: When do they start?

A: October 6th, students will begin first hour on Wednesdays at 9:30 instead of 7:50.

Q: Does my middle school student need to come to school on these special Wednesdays?

A: Yes! All students grades 6-8 will need to come to the building on Wednesdays.

On these special Wednesdays, we will start first period at 9:30 instead of 7:50. Students bus routes will run. Students who are dropped off or who walk can come into the building as early at 9:10 for breakfast. They will have all 6 periods.

Q: What if I have more questions?

A: You should email or call Leah Bourg, Principal at South St. Paul Middle School. You could also attend the Parent Advisory Group that will take place virtually on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 7 pm. You can RSVP, just scroll down.

Q: What if my family is really struggling with the logistics of this?

A: Please call Ms. Bourg. She wants to help figure it out! Ms. Bourg can be reached at 651-503-4846 or lbourg@sspps.org.

Q: What if my student forgets about the special Wednesday schedule?

A: We have Connections class on Tuesdays to remind students, and prep them for their asynchronous assignment. We will also send messages on Tuesday night to students and families.
