College Decision Day - May 1
What Do You Need To Do By May 1?
- Some colleges have pushed their Decision Date back -- so make sure to check your emails and follow the instructions to the tee!
- Deposit at only one school! In your acceptance packet from each college, there should be instructions. Read and complete everything carefully.
- If you have been offered a financial aid package, complete all forms and documents to accept any or all financial aid. You can choose to accept or decline any part of your financial aid package i.e. student loans or parent plus loans.
- If you're feeling stressed, remember that your choice is not completely irreversible. If you choose a college, even start classes, and feel it was a wrong decision, you can always consider transferring. A transfer involves work, but it's your college career and you should be satisfied with your choice.
- Some colleges may try to pressure you into making a decision before May 1. Unless you chose an Early Decision program that committed you to attending if admitted, you are not required to decide until May 1 and some colleges have extended that deadline due to Covid 19.
Class of 2021 Graduation and Scholarship Surveys
- Please complete the Class of 2021 Graduation Survey. Login to Naviance Student > About Me > My Surveys > Class of 2021 Graduation Survey.
- Follow the link in the survey to record all the scholarships you've received(regardless of whether you accept them) . We'd like to honor your hard work at graduation by posting all scholarships in the graduation program.
Admission Decision Questions?
Denial News
Don't take the decision personally! Admission offices receive thousands of applications. Often, your denial has more to do with the large volume of applicants than whether or not you are qualified for admission. Redirect your energy to those colleges who have welcomed you.
Appeal Efforts
Some schools will consider appeals. If you were not admitted to your top choice school then you may want to appeal. Components of an appeal are determined by each college but may include: a statement of purpose, additional grades or information, and/or an offer to interview. Email college counseling for help with this process.
No Offers of Admission
If you find yourself in this situation:
- Don't panic!
- Email college counseling immediately to schedule a meeting.
Waiting List
Each year, many students are placed on a waiting list. They're asking you, "If we have room later, would you like to be considered again?"
Persistence may pay off! Respond to the offer with a detailed letter expressing your interest, send improved grades, another essay, recommendations, call the admission representative and discuss how to improve your chances of getting admitted.
But --- have a backup plan! Maybe your second choice school is the way to go!
