Tips for Parents when Helping your Teen with Stress
Above are some tips for parents who are helping their child(ren) with stress. I often hear students say how overwhelmed they are which leads them to feeling more anxious than normal. These tips are great starting points in a conversation about what your child can do to deal with how they are feeling. Staying present and starting small can help in difficult times. Most importantly, your child may just need someone to listen and not try to fix things for them.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month
Alcohol and drug use is a very risky business for young people, and parents can make a difference. The longer children delay drinking and drug use, the less likely they are to develop any problems associated with it. That’s why it is so important to help your child connect the dots and make smart decisions about alcohol and drugs.”
~Andrew Pucher, President and CEO of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence
In 1987, The NDADD established April as “National Alcohol Awareness Month” in an effort to highlight the dangers of alcohol abuse and the consequences of underage drinking.
Statistics Tell the Tale
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol is the most commonly-abused addictive substance among American youth. Within the past month:
- 1 out of every 3 American high school students have drunk alcohol at least once.
- Almost 1 in 5 have engaged in dangerous binge-drinking.
- 8% consumed alcohol and then drove.
- 20% accepted a ride from someone else who had been drinking.
- Over 4300 underage youths die every year due to excessive drinking.
- Annually, alcohol-related causes result in more than 189,000 Emergency Room visits by youths.

Take Back Day - April 22nd 2023
The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat. DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.
Harrison Township and Mantua Township Police Departments both have drop boxes where you can dispense of prescription medication in a safe manner.

National Youth Violence Prevention Week
National Youth Violence Prevention Week, from April 24 to 28 this year, is the time of the year when certain organizations place a great focus on preventing youth violence. Sponsored by the National Association of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) and Sandy Hook Promise, the week looks at the different instances of youth violence that have taken place over the past few years. It also aims to encourage student involvement, so people of all ages are better prepared to tackle cases of youth violence before they occur. The end goal is to ensure no young lives are lost in horrifying acts of violence.
