North Side News

Week of February 18th - 22nd, 2019

Is your math discussion as rich as your reading discussion?

Time to reflect on mathematical conversations taking place in your classroom - are they one-sided? Do the same 5 kids raise their hand to share? Are both partners sharing when you say turn and talk? What do the conversations sound like, rich understanding?

As you think about this, you may be thinking, "How do I get more students involved in discussion and answering?"

This week, we all received an e-mail from Ready Math called: Newsletter: Ideas for Keeping the Momentum Going in Math Class This Spring. Have you taken a look?

One section focuses on tips to help you strengthen discourse for all learners. IT IS WORTH THE READ!!!! Suggestions include having some students paraphrase or repeat what others just shared or stated. My favorite idea is - hide the question. Students are discussing and sharing what they think the mathematical question is based off the work and answer. Think about the DOK Levels this requires from your students!

If you are unable to find this newsletter in your e-mail, I will forward it to you. It has some great information and ideas! How will you use them?
