Inspiring Excellence
Casa Grande Union High School District | December 2022
Superintendent Message
Hello CGUHSD!
I hope all is well and that you and yours are planning for quality time over break. If not, I encourage you to do so. When we return in January, the pace picks up and before we know it seniors will be walking across the stage to receive diplomas. Some of the students have plans to graduate early. Congratulations! We look forward to the remaining Class of '23 to join you as graduates in May 2023.
Senior parents, be sure to look for important information regarding all senior activities. Don’t delete, please read, as there is a lot of information the sites want you to know. For those of you returning next year, the online registration link is up and running (Online Registration Link). We appreciate those of you who have already completed the required online registration. If you do not have access to technology at home or at work, please come into the schools and you will be able to complete the process online with support, if needed.
We are registering earlier this year, so we will be able to have more time to develop an efficient master schedule to support our goal of hiring highly effective staff in all areas. We must compete for talent. I want to thank the CGUHSD Governing Board for their support in developing a competitive salary schedule. Doing so will attract some of the best talent in the field.
I’d like to recognize December’s Staff Member of the Month: Alexsandra Enamorado (please see below).
Every two weeks, our students take progress check assessments to measure their progress towards mastering key standards assessed on the ACT and ACT Aspire assessments. Here are the students who mastered the last mastery check and students who were proficient:
Congratulations students!!
With much thoughtfulness, the site principals have created a restroom access plan and a tardy/attendance plan. Each principal will send you the specifics of those site plans. They have been given the autonomy to develop a plan with their department instructional leaders and site administrators to lessen the number of tardies/absences and provide adequate information about facilities available. The security staff will be strategically stationed to support supervision, and the students will have clear guidelines of what will be the outcome for tardies and attendance issues. None of what is going to be implemented is to be a surprise, so prior to break or before full implementation, sites will be asked to inform all and practice. However, when we return in January, it will be fully executed and in place.
The academic calendars for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 school years were approved by the Governing Board on December 6th. These calendars were developed by a representative committee of CGUHSD employees with feedback from the broader faculty. FY 23/24 is similar to FY 22/23; however, FY 24/25 has a week for Fall Break in October and the second week will be during the week of Thanksgiving. This option was selected by the committee so school does not start too early in July and will still end before Memorial Day. The required number of school days is still being honored. The calendar committee will meet next year to continue to evaluate the CGUHSD calendar to best support families. Please refer to these calendars as you begin making long-range planning with your families.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Jack Henness and Mr. Joe Lopez for their dedication and commitment to Casa Grande Union High School District. These two gentlemen are the epitome of professionalism, care, and positive acts and compassion and have supported student achievement for CGUHSD schools, students, staff, and community members with their very best. Thank you for your service. Additionally, I would like to welcome Mr. Stephen Hunt and Mr. Steve Hayes to the Governing Board. We look forward to working with each of you and appreciate your willingness to become members of the CGUHSD Governing Board. Welcome to the CGUHSD family!
Sincerely,
Dr. Anna Battle

Expert Modern Classroom Mentor: Ms. Scheeler
Congratulations to Ms. Scheeler, VGHS Mathematics teacher, for her wonderful accomplishment. She has engaged and excelled in Modern Classroom Learning and, therefore, been recognized as an Expert Modern Classroom Mentor. This is a wonderful recognition that represents her dedication, knowledge, and skills to personalize and improve instruction for every student. Seal of Biliteracy
Casa Grande Union High School District (CGUHSD) is participating in the Arizona Department of Education’s Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by CGUHSD to qualifying students in recognition of those who have attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Additionally, the Seal of Biliteracy recognizes, supports, and endorses students' first/home languages.
The Seal of Biliteracy is open to any student who qualifies, including ELL students and exchange students. The Seal of Biliteracy encourages participants to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills our students attain, and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. It takes the form of a seal that appears on the diploma of the graduating senior and is also documented on their official transcript.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than sixty-five million U.S. residents speak a language other than English at home—a number that has been growing decade by decade since the 1970s. Nevertheless, that number represents only 20.7 percent of the total population, and only a fraction of this cohort speaks, reads, and comprehends a second language well enough to use it in their everyday lives. Most American citizens remain monolingual.
CGUHSD students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy receive a qualification email, a certificate signed by the Superintendent, a cord, and a medal. A gold seal is placed on the student's diploma and documentation of the Seal of Biliteracy, by language, is recorded on the student's official CGUHSD transcript. Please note that if students qualify as a junior, they will receive a qualification email and the designation will be posted to their transcript, however, the certificate, the cord, the medal, and the gold-embossed seal for the diploma will be awarded when they are a senior prior to graduation.
For more information, visit www.cguhsd.org/doSealOfBiliteracy.aspx. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Roel, Subject Matter Expert: World Languages/Electives and Seal of Biliteracy Coordinator at mroel-vecino@cguhsd.org.

The parade theme is "Remembering the Past and Celebrating Our Future" and marks the 81st Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Cougars are coached by Katie Kramer, Dominique Estrada, Michelle Estrada, and Brooklyn Nolasco.

Golf: Sarah Davis Competes at Golf State Tournament
Sarah Davis (VGHS) competed at the Division II Girls Golf State Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, Arizona, October 31-November 1. A total of 18 individual players qualified for the girls state tournament. In order to qualify, an individual had to have competed in a minimum of seven (7) rounds. Each individual's best seven (7) rounds were used for qualification purposes. The top 18 individuals not on a qualifying team - based on their individual iWr at the conclusion of the regular season - advanced to the state tournament. An iWr is equal to the player’s score minus the tee box rating multiplied by 113 and then divided by the slope. The Spartans are coached by Mackinnon Olson, Mathematics teacher. FAFSA® Form
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education rewards over $120 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds to more than 13 million students. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the only way to apply for federal, state, and college aid. It is completely free and it typically takes ONLY 30 minutes to complete. Many schools offer money on a first-come-first-serve basis, so the sooner one applies, the better. For more information on Financial Aid, visit your high school's webpage (CGUHS or VGHS).
PowerSchool App
The PowerSchool App is available for download on Android and Apple devices with the district code of QJDT. Your username and password are the same as you use to access the web-based PowerSchool portal.

Scholarship Opportunities
It is a known fact college is expensive and the cost is rising. Do not let that deter you from applying for college. There are many opportunities to help you cover the cost of college. Scholarships are gifts of "free money" that do not need to be paid back, unlike student loans. Most scholarships can be awarded based on merit, which means that students earn them for having good grades, athletic talent, volunteering, or even for a certain demographic. Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars are awarded in scholarship money. There are many sources of scholarship, such as colleges and universities, military, individuals, communities, nonprofits, ethnic/historical organizations, businesses, religious groups, and more. Some scholarships are highly selective but many are not. The best practice is to apply for as many scholarships as possible and start early.
