A Note from the Principal
One of the 21st Century Learning Skills (G21) that we teach is collaboration. Collaboration includes being a productive group member, communicating effectively, supporting views and findings, and reflecting on how your group is doing.
This makes sense; there aren't many jobs out there that don't require that you collaborate with others. Businesses have realized that effective teams create better outcomes than individuals, and so in interviews, they're looking for people with strong collaboration skills. Working well with a team is something that can make or break your career.
Group work isn't new to school. I participated in many group projects throughout my school career. But usually, one person did the majority of the work, and we all got the same grade. What's different today is that we teach kids what it looks like and sounds like to work together. We teach them to invite others into the conversation. We teach them to respectfully disagree with one another, to listen, and to ask questions.
The bonus is that research shows that these skills also lead to increased academic achievement, so by focusing on them, we both better prepare children for their futures and help them to learn more deeply.

We've continued to focus on courtesy, which is a sub-topic of respect. Below is a video students watched teaching them about what it means.
